There is only a struggle if someone actually believes they are building sweat equity and a future as TEFLer in LOS. If the money isn't an issue and the teaching gig is easy, then the lifestyle can be much simpler and more satisfying than life in the West.

I don't know about pay/conditions for Brazil, but Westerners aren't flocking in droves to LOS any more. It appears that most visitors to the kingdom are arabs, indians and japanese ... and the russians who've taken over Patters and Phuket and have no need of Thai pussy since they import their own.

Nah, deadly serious. All those teachers who have been there for any length of time will not just be earning their basic. There are all kinds of add-ons, from after school classes and test preparation (giving those who pay the answers) to straight out payment for grades and placements. really, any teacher of a long service will have an 'angle'. Whitey usually doesn't get an in on these angles.

Herein lies in the struggle. If you are in LOS to earn enough $$ to buy a home/car in the West, then you're on the wrong track. If you have all those wonderful things you mentioned already, then the Thai salary is just walk-around money. If your only goal in life is to make big bucks, then you shouldn't be working at ANY school. But you are correct about marrying rich ... wish you the best with that.

I must be livin' in a different Thailand then....the one where I'm at a government school in Bangkok and get basically the same as the two longest serving staff members (30+ years)...and....this 'angle' you keep banging on about...what's that all about?

^I don't think they would advertise the under-the-table payments to you.

Yeah, I can't imagine people who have been in the civil service rackets for over thirty years would be living on their base salary.

Most of those with long service are on the take. I have already given examples of the rackets. What else do you want to know?

Bribes for placement for a start, the director has to let some trickle down.

    ---Update---

More or less legit money for after school classes and various bonuses.

Willy, and when calculating salary in comparison to NES, don't forget the example you have just come up with - the access to great (legal) benefits. Not just the cheap loans, but many different benefits, all of which whitey has no access to.

Did you count the zeros properly? That is a lot to pay off on less than 400'000 a year.

    ---Update---

Health care for your parents, partner and offspring I know quite a few people who have gone into the civil service for that and the pension.
