    Request 70,000 Baht Salary Question

I'm looking at a school in Bangkok that has a salary of 70K baht a month, it's a non ESL position. 20 teaching hours a week, and airfare. It also includes a housing allowance of underdetermined amount, and a health medical plan of some kind. The head of the school made a big show of based on my experience, degrees, certifications, etc that the 70,000 baht salary is where I would be on the salary scale, even though the vacany announcment stated a starting salary of 70,000. I'm confused as to what this means. Is there really just one salary for this position no mater the qualifications, or is this the average on an actual salary scale, and I just happen to be in that bracket? Is this enough of a salary to live (or live well)? I've seen international schools with 150,000 baht salaries (ISB) and of course seen a lot of ESL salaries as low as 30,000 baht. Should I ask for more, and why the vague, housing allowance?

    ^what are your qualifications?

70k is plenty to live on in Bangkok, especially with a housing allowance and flights thrown in. You won't starve.

Masters degree, teaching license, 4 years k-12, IB experience. I don't just want to get by, or struggle financially. I want to have a nice social life, etc.

But, that's up to you. Isn't it? I'm clocking on 10 years here and haven't found it a problem.

...compared to the 40K that many here think is financial nirvana, 70K sounds princely. However, prices in bkk rise regularly and appear to hit high-end rentals, malls, and restaurants first. You may find you need something closer to 100K to get a good taste of better living in bkk. As an aside, something doesn't smell right with all the bennies listed and such a comparatively low salary...I wonder if your offer comes from a second- or third-tier international school where contract shenanighans may ambush the unwary...

It's an international program inside a Thai school, connected to a university. Even if not an international school, it does seem low tier. Honestly, it sounds more like a university package for an overseas hire, more then an international school package. If it wasn't for the airfare, I'd say it was a local hire package. The money is just right there on the edge. If it was 80,000 Baht, relocation allowance, airfare, world wide medical, and a nice housing allowance, or provided housing I wouldn't be asking. It's just not quite an international school package, and more then an ESL package. It's also getting late, in the hiring season. Were into July almost and school starts in 6 weeks, not a lot more time to find a good position.

Low enough to take a pass this late in the hiring season? How much more would make it acceptable?

Decide what sort of house/condo you want, tell them that your housing allowance will have to cover this amount.

+90K salary, 20-25K housing + usual bennies makes it interesting: otherwise, it's wearing a harness and going out to plow...

This late in the hiring season, I would just say yes, go for it and make up the difference by eating Thai food at humble restaurants. This is your only job offer? Most employers would want to meet in person first... Next school yer, you are free to go for the 6-digit jobs.
Time is money and not earning while holding out for that elusive better job offer might cost you dearly. I'm supplementing my meagre salary by moonlighting.

    Good luck!
    Chris

When to you get to see the airfare ticket money?

    The rest looks reasonable.
