Hello,
I am a Belgian citizen and dream of teaching in Asia.
Because i am not a native English speaker and do not have a degree i know it is legally impossible.
So next week i will enroll college, aiming for a Bachelor in education ( English and Economics).
Would this degree be sufficient to qualify for a teaching position? Even if i am not for an English speaking country? ( I speak Dutch so i dont have a bad accent.)
Is it correct that the law has changed and that a degree in Education is necessary now?
I ask this because if a degree in Education is not needed i would study Sociology..
Thank you for your help!
Merijn
When you want to work legally in basic education in Thailand, a degree is necessary.
A degree in education makes you eligible for a teacher license from the Teachers' Council of Thailand. Holders of other degrees have to sit the TCT Professional Knowledge Tests.
Search on this forum for more info on teacher license topics.
The 'laws' will all be different by the time you've finished any way so not to worry.
One thing will still be the same though.
None of the laws will matter depending on your employer... immigration officer... the day of the week etc etc.

A degree in Education is NOT required. I'm a non-native speaker with a Master's in Media Consulting and got the work permit and 2 year teacher's license anyway![]()
Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.
Aldous Huxley
for mainstream education, correct. for other areas of teaching, not necessarily.
only if you'd like to be excluded from the TCT's PKTs.
a gross exaggeration.
another exaggeration. yes, you might find work but unless you have the proper quals, you're always going to be at the mercy of your employer.
when was this? did you do it without taking the PKTs? i assume by "2 year teacher's license" you actually mean the "2-year provisional teaching license". am i correct?
In this discussion nobody said that a education degree was required. A degree in other fields is.
However, if you want to acquire a teacher license from The Teachers' Council of Thailand you must have a degree in education or equivalent.

Qualifications
Foreigners who want to apply for a teaching license shall have the following qualifications:
1. Be at least 20 years of age
2. Hold a degree in Education or an equivalent or in other related fields accredited by the Teachers Council of Thailand
3. Not Possess any of the prohibited characteristics pursuant to section 44 of the Teachers

By the way, your 2 year teacher license can't have been issued by The Teachers' Council of Thailand. They only issue teacher licenses valid for 5 years.![]()
You might not like it but as a matter of fact my Teachers' License (issued by The Teachers' Council of Thailand) IS valid for 2 years.
Btw when it comes to laws/rules/regulations Thailand can be a disturbing place for pedants
@Crew, that was this year, without taking the PKT. Yes, it's a provisional teaching license.

You may not like it but you don't have a teacher license. You have a provisional teaching permit often called waiver.
