alot of grammar is regional. I doubt you'd ever here an American say 'the team are' but i hear Brits do it regularly. If asked both will give you a good reason for saying the way they did, but bottom line they do it cuz thats how its done where they were brought up. it just sounds right to them. IMO anyway...

Also the Brits use the French spelling "colour" while the Mericans are not so faggy and spell it "color".
Same with "litre", "programme" and "douche".
