Limits on Salaries for Foreign Teachers in Government OBEC Schools.

The other day I read some documents announcing the maximum salaries for foreign teachers working in government primary and secondary formal education schools. I'm not sure whether this is a measure issued by the Educational Service Area of The Ministry of Education in my province or that this applies to all government primary and secondary formal education schools in Thailand.

    The maximum salaries are:

    • 30,000 THB for primary schools
    • 35,000 THB for secondary schools

It doesn't mean that foreign teachers in government schools can't earn more than the maximum salary but the excess will be off-employment contract and funded by other sources.

    Have you heard about this?

I don't think it applies to E.Ps though. Current job ... 48,000. Last job ... 36,000. One before that (in Korat) 35,000.

That's just for the "normal" hours ... extra classes not included.

Is there a mention of the length of contracts?
It used to be 10 months, but now 8 months seems to be the norm!
I like you. You remind me of when I was young and stupid.

Mostly for bottom of the barrel General English gigs. Anyone still doing one of those after a year or two is doing something wrong.

In the past, English Programs were separate entities. That's past, at least in our English Program government school.

I haven't read about that. At our school we always had 12 month contracts but the director is considering 12 month contracts but only 11 or 10 months pay.

Yes ... but via an agency ... of sorts. They are a single entity within the school itself. They don't deal with any other schools (yet?). Run by a Brit and a Yank.

Still current in my present one ... and the last two.

That might be the future. No direct employment but through agencies. That's a complete different type of bookkeeping.

They don't just provide teachers though. They actually run the entire English Program. They take care of everything, curriculum to textbooks to staff.

That's what I meant by an agency "of sorts" Not an employment agency. A .... ? what agency?

I have two contracts. One contract has the salary allowed and the second contract has my actual salary.

If they wanted to, they could increase the housing allowance.

And, as far as I am concerned, 9.5 month contracts are not feasible for most teachers, unless they have outside income.

A family of two or three can't realistically survive on 30,000 B / month, never mind if you have 2.5 months without income.

That is one of the many reasons why schools can't retain decent teachers.

We had that some time ago until it wasn't allowed anymore. Complaints from the Revenue Department evading tax.
