Offer Too good to be true???

Just ran across something interesting online and wanted you TEFLer's take on this...

American TESOL Institute offers a 3-week TESOL training program in Phuket (in April, before the next semester) where for $990 you get housing accomodations, a TESOL certification (equivalent to TEFL), and a guaranteed 4-5-month teaching contract at a school that includes 30K Bht salary and housing accomodations from the school for the duration of your contract. That almost sounds too good to be true! I understand the pay is average at best but the housing part (even if crappy) helps, correct? Also, the 4-5 month contract is nice because I'm a father and staying away from my son for an entire year is very difficult. Skype is great to talk everyday but I have my son 50-50 so this is a HUGE decision to be away from my little man this long. The half-year position gives me the opportunity to decide whether or not I could continue teaching in a foreign country, and bring my son there eventually. I've taught 8 years in the states but so few teaching positions are available right now so is it just me or is this half-year position ideal for me?
    Thanks guys!

How do you expect to come out on top on a 5 month contract? Course and Airplane ticket is 2k right there. I don't get it.

See Fleabag's thread to understand just how crappy it can get.

Who said 100K? Lol. This is the education field dude.

    ---Update---

No, I can get a ticket for $700, so more like $1600, but regardless it's a short-term experience to get my feet wet.

I've read some pretty nasty stories with regards to that 30k, 4-5 month guaranteed employment.

    ................

Ask these folks about the place of work, expectations in terms of working hours, etc.

(You don't want to be doing substituion teacher duties for 5 months...and I wouldn't rule the possibility out that this is exactly what is entailed)

I've heard of people doing that course, being shifted from one school to another over the course of a week, having to work Saturday and Sundays.....

...........so back to a general truth in life.

If it sounds too good to be true, then it isn't true.

I'd have a long hard look at the details before getting involved...

    just my two cents..........

The "free" accommodation could easily be on school grounds. Wave your privacy goodbye.
