I have been working at a great school in khon Kaen for the last six months(after my failed Laos fiasco) it is a good and well respected school with 3500 students and seven foreign English teachers. When i was hired I was aware that after the students go for summer break the foreign teachers do a couple weeks of community teaching. Police station, immigration, city hall etc. The guys said it is ok and they make great contacts. I had no problem with this. Then we had a meeting for the community work, they changed the schedule so the whole holiday was filled with teaching. We were only going to get 5 days holidays instead of 45! On top of that they said we either have to
dismiss 2 employees or everyone drops in wage. I put up my hand and
volunteered to quit, if they would give me full pay for march and april,
they agreed. No one else
volunteered so they based dismissal on student evaluations. Mr.x was
number 7 so he got fired. (he is a good teacher, responsible, etc and with wife and child, so that sucks.)
I was actually number 2 so I had nothing to
worry about except I love my holidays.
When we were discussing our summer work the dept head kept mentioning one of the schools in town
is paying only 25,000 per mo. Our foreign teachers are making 33-39,000.
After days and days of delay the remaining teachers were finally given their new contracts, filled with all kind of loopholes which basically claim ownership on the teachers. Three of them balked at the contract and they were informed the school had a stack of resumes and they could be replaced easily. Some of these teachers have been here 5+ years and all has been fine. They are all pissed but not in a position to walk out.
Ok I have also heard of 3 other "Top" schools in the city dropping wages or benefits.
kind of long winded but the point is "Has anyone else noticed wages going down this term?" or is it just a Khon kaen thing.
Not happening here (Lalee/Kburi); must be a Khon Khaen thing (which is utter bullshit). Good for you for walking; I'd a done the same.![]()

I wouldn't volunteer. I would let them kick me out.
What are you thinking marcusb? My initial hunch reading your post was 'cartel'. They get together with some of the big players in town to drive down wages. The rest of the schools adjust accordingly.
Hasn't happened at my school in the capital thankfully. It'll be interesting to see if any other Khon Khaen teachers have any info.
I think you were pretty sharp with your exit strategyGood luck getting another position. I hope it goes well for you

always some stupid demoralizing crap they enjoyably put on you.
good for u
sux for those with family
would love to see someone put a note in all the kids bags explaining that the school is cutting native staff and they would get a discount on next years fees, and when they dont watch the SHTF.

Are you guys who are older and working in Thailand as a teacher, excluding international schools, worried about the future?
