    Must do's in Suratthani area

I am moving to Suratthani soon and even though i have been there a few times, all I hear from people is that there is nothing to do. This is coming from people who have just passed through as travellers. I am sure that being in a country as beautiful as Thailand, there has to be things to do. Maybe not right in town but I am big into hiking. I only have a few months there so if anyone can help on things that I MUST DO before leaving please fill me in.

Koh Samui (nightlife, pubs, decent restaurants, good beaches) Koh Phangan(full Moon party every month) Koh Tao (one of the best diving spots in Thailand) - All on your doorstep.

Samui sucks. Kanhom used to be nice till prices trippled. Make friends, go on day trips. If you don't like pubs and drinking there's really not much to do .. cept work.

Surat is full of dodgy, bad-smelling and/or drunken backpackers on their way to the islands. The last time I was visiting friends there some very drunken Aussie scum started to threaten violence if I wouldn't tell them where they could get some cigarettes.

Beautiful river there, though...and my gf had a blast the last time she was there, but then she wasn't accosted by any drunken farang, either.

Thanks for the advice, I do happen to like going out for a beer or two, I already have some friends down there but they are new to the area too so just thought i would ask to see if there were tidbits of advice from folks who have spent more time there. I know I would like to go to the islands, samui is definitely beautiful but I am not so familiar with mainland things to do. Jungle hiking and treehouses sound nice, thanks to all!

It's unfortunate but Suratthanni does have a pretty well deserved reputation as a general shithole.

I get there about once a month and wonder what I would possibly find to do. The islands are nice, but for a normal weekend it's a bit of a run.

Good luck in your new venture.

I have been here. It is a nice place. Go see the Monkey cave!

Also, there is a beach called - 'Kah knome' (sp?). It is a secluded beach, at least when I was there. It costs 60 baht to get there from the bus station. Nice place to take your better half! Actually, now that I mention it, I wonder what it is like now?

There were bungalows near the beach.

There are also a few night clubs if you are into that.

    Have fun!

Thanks again, i am looking forward to it. I have been there a few times and I have to say, so far I don't find it the shithole people are saying it is, but you guys are scaring me. I will have to go and see for myself.

You could possibly be right boombox, the folks that find the place a shit-hole are the ones passing through or there for a day or two. It's far from being the most interesting place in the world but it certainly is not a shit-hole either. The unwashed back-packers hang around near the tour agencies whilst waiting for their next bus so you don't have to worry about them, Surat is basically a fairly clean, tidy and comfortable city.

JD's right about about making friends and going on day trips, there are lots of places within an hour or two - waterfalls, beaches, National Parks (not only Khao Sok) and hot springs. The Tapee River (bars and restaurants) is a nice place to hang out as well with Lumphu Island (jogging, football, volleyball, relaxing) in the middle. Khanom is actually just over the border in Nakhorn Sri Thammarat province and it is a very pretty beach but accommodation has increased. There is also a Monkey Training Centre and a cave full of Buddha images and bats on the road to Kanchanadit which are both worth a visit. The Rajjaprabha Dam has raft house and hotel accommodation and is a stunningly beautiful area with limestone islands and cliffs.

Thanks y'all. Been here now for a few weeks and love it even more. It is a clean city within easy travel distance to many awesome places and enough to do during the week to keep me busy. It definitely beats the shit out of Nong Khaem Bangkok.

    Glad you're enjoying it.

Can you let us know more about the awesome places? I'm interested because my opinion is more in line with the majority who've posted on this thread.

    Obviously we need enlightenment.

Re: Must do's in Suratthani area

Got pulled over on a traffic stop in Surat recently, cop confiscated my driver's license (he looked shocked that I had one, I think he was just goin' fishing for farangs) and sent me off to the police station.
This was on a slow Sunday morning. Arrived at the police station and there were 2 other farangs with long faces standing tall before the man. Looked like a farang shakedown was in progress, but I didn't talk to my fellow palefaces, they didn't seem in the mood and I think they were Germans, anyway. I got off lucky, talked a 1500 baht ripoff down to 200 baht.

I wasn't impressed with the place, as in my wide travels I've only been stopped by traffic cops twice in 5 years, and I got the feeling that the police in this burg think farangs are easy pickin's.

Possibly some of the places that I suggested in my previous post? Just a thought. That was the point of the OP I think.
