    Surat thani

So I was looking at jobs yesterday and found that there were a few down in Surat Thani. I'm still trying to decide where in Thailand I want to start out, and like most, I like beautiful beaches and all that jazz. I read the regional review and did a search on here and the results were pretty diverse as to experiences. However, I didn't see any threads devoted to the place, so I thought this would be as good a place as any for this discussion.

So what are your experiences there? Have any of you worked there? I don't think I'd mind being away from Bangkok (having no experience though, I can't be sure). I don't need that crazy of a nightlife and I have no plans of being a sexpat, just a good bar and maybe a band every now and then works for me.

Thanks for any help I can get.

i think you will find that some of the bands are male bands,so depending which way your swinging it may not be a good place for wild sex.

I lived for about six months in Surat Thani back in 1999-2000. I worked at the Rajabhat.
My impressions of Surat are not too positive. The place could stand a good tidying up. I understand that Surat has got a new governer so perhaps it's better these days.
Nightlife? Can't help you there as I am married and I had a small kid at home so I didn't really do pub crawls in Surat as that wasn't the focus of my life at the time. Seven days a week at the Rajabhat didn't really encourage any effort on my part to develop into a bon vivant about town.
For a better experience in a seaside town down south try maybe Songkhla. I really liked that place.

    .

I don't think you need to actually plan it, they've already planned it for you. Memorize this phrase, "Mai mee ngeun luui," (I don't have any money at all), and this one, "Mai dai, Dangaan laao" (I can't, I'm already married), and be sure to unload your gun before you venture out at night…

I never went to a go-go bar, but just walking down the streets in CM in bright daylight I had girls calling to me from bars, even from across the street. "Hello!" 'Nother words you don't have to go looking for it. And stay out of the massage parlors. I got propositioned twice.

I lived there for three years. Worked at rajabottom too. There are no beaches there, just the river that hits the sea about 30-40 clicks down the road. The nearest beach is about 40 minutes in minibus. It's a good beach. The town hasn't much to offer. Like any other place it's your friends that make it livable, or fun. Forget nightlife. The biggest night of music I had in Surat is when a Philippine band came to the Cross-Roads Tavern and played for two sets. Kho Samui isn't much fun either. There are lots of bars there though, and it's not really so expensive - but it's Kho Samui and that's what's wrong with it. What made my years livable was the fact I had a big bike and ate up some miles day-touring the South.
It's not hot there as in BKK, always a nice breeze. The people are all right, but provincial for sure. Shopping sucks.
