The big deal Cy is that it's a beautiful national park so unless ur braindead u'd want to see all of it
I stopped going to Koh Samet after 1998. That's when the Jet Ski's started to get too much.
The island is so small thet you can walk everywhere, and don't need vehicles. The only time I ever took a ride was when I'd been dropped off at the top of the island with my gear and wanted a ride down the island without carrying all my luggage.
You can walk over the widest part of the island in about 20 minutes, so I don't see why you'd need an ATC to do it.

^ I personally couldn't have walked it mate....some people (most people it seems) are stronger than others (by others I mean me)....I'd have been a sweaty mess and probably have had heart palpatations (sp?). Also I (and especially not my kid) could not have walked from where we stayed to the ferry with or without baggage.
And no jets skis on the beach where we stayed (was some round the corner though, but didn't come too near).

I too have stayed in several haunts on Samet. You CANNOT walk all over the island with ease. It's not huge....but it's also not exactly made for walking.

I'd be interested to know where exactly that is on Ko Samet 'cause looks like the nicest place on the island.
I'll tell you (although I think it might be a bit pricey for you mate ) if you tell me why you have Peter Stringfellow as your avatar???

Is the place on Ao Wai bay? There are 20 thousand baht a night places of Samet now. Read Mu Ban Talay and others.

U poor fux,,,, I dun know where u went but it wasn't Samet
The first time I visited Koh Samet was 1991, I made it my regular stopover when I later moved back to Taiwan and would visit it at least twice a year.
Back then the term "National Park" meant that no new bungalows were supposed to be built and electriciy would only be available from 6 pm to 6 am.
I walked it many a time and went diving in the back (Ao Praw) with a Belgium guy. The coral had been dynamited back in the 80's, so there was only small coral coming back and since the water depth is only 12 meters at the deepest (and about 4 meters average) Jet Skis will again destroy the rest of it.
The nice thing about the place back then, was no Motor vehicles (other than the one or two pickup trucks that acted as taxi) and no loud music and bargirls (there was plenty of that at Pattaya). There were vendors that sold fresh mango and pineapple, clean beaches, good food in the restaurants and a great place to relax without being hassled.
I lived in Phuket for a year and I used to go to Koh Samet to get away from the hustle of Phuket.
I'm sure it's fun to ride the ATC's there (I used to do it when I visited my friends in Tuscon) it's just that if you'd seen how nice a place it had been before, you'd boycott them, just like we used to do with the jet skis when they first showed up.

I just think it's a shame that people who like the state of how pattaya, samui and large parts of phuket are now don't just go to those places and a NATIONAL PARK like samed isn't kept like it used to be.
I mean, the THEORY is that's what you pay your 200 baht for, right?
Samed used to be great - a peaceful haven within easy reach of bangkok where the room prices were affordable on a teacher's salary. I suppose that combination was never gonna last.
Sorry, but I just don't get the compulsion to 'get around' the island. I mean, it's trees skirted by sand which is skirted by the sea.
Anyway, no more peace and quiet for 300 - 600 baht a night.
Now to get peace you're gonna have to pay circa 3,000 baht a night to stay at some swish, isolated place.
And then some more to tear around the island like a loon.

And I'm sure the rooms are cheaper in Pattaya and more Jet Skis to choose from.
Wind and Sea and Ao Praw were so great and if you're on vacation, why should you care how long it takes you to get around, what's the hurry?
That's why you leave cities behind, right?

Can depend on how long you're on holiday for I'd guess.
Also like I said where 8Ball went you'd struggle to get there just by walking and the kids certainly wouldn't be able to do it. There didn't seem to be too many places to stay near to the dirt road....so probably not annoying anyone. I don't think anyone was tearing around like a loon (I think what you two are visualising is vastly different from what it actually was).

Boats used to drop you off at various places around the island, they don't do that anymore?

I'm not sure that is possible, surely you wouldn't know the difference unless you had been there (then).
I know that Samui, even used to be a really laid back place in the 80's, but after the airport went in (1992), it went into money grabbing mode.
The thing is, that Koh Samet is a NATIONAL PARK. As such the laws regulating it should make it a more peaceful place. The same applies to Koh Phi Phi.
