I really enjoyed ao phutsa. (I think its also called ao taptim). Somebody recommended it on a previous thread here. Its sort of the last of the series of beaches that start at the ferry pier. Since its the last one its quieter but you can still get to silver sand beach easily by walking along the beach.
candlelight beach is alright too. i got a bungalow right on the water there for 600 baht last time

I have found Koh Samet to be too expensive in general. I will drive an hour and a half more and go to Chang from now on.

Seems par for the course with the islands.
I visited Koh Samet once. Stayed in a pretty quiet little place that I can't remember the name of.
The problems came in the evenings. We went down to the bars for a few beers and a meal. Problem is that each bar (crowded right next to each other) insist on playing different music at maximum volume.
i went to Koh Samet once and vowed never to go back... full of fat, old, ignorant Germans walking about hand in hand with very young thai boys/girls.. and the busiest beach seems to be owned by the germans... i prefered silver sands beach though we did stay on the 3rd beach down for a few days and it was ok.. about 500bht/night and quiet but the next one down is the pervs beach..
like AO i will keep going to Koh Chang... well worth the extra few hours journey...

But if you stay where I like Ao Wai, you must walk literally hours over big hills to get to some nightlife. Chang, Chang, Chang, I had live here 20 years before I went. Made me feel very stupid. Believe me Samet is beautiful, but it does not fit the ao family bill anymore.

Koh Chang is the far better choice for sure. The only problem I have with it is that it's becoming too developed. I've been going there twice a year on average for the last 5 years, and it's depressing to see the direction it's going. Still a lovely spot, but enjoy it while you can.
