Re: Koh Samet - Please Help

The accomodation on Samet has become too overpriced. I can get the same bungalow on Chang for less than half of Samet.

Re: Koh Samet - Please Help

I totally agree about Kho samet not being the same as 4 yrs ago, IMO it lost a lot of his charm. I would suggest Kho Chang instead, though the 5 hours bus ride sucks.

Yup - the length of that trip puts it out of reach for a weekend away for bangkokians.

Samed's accessibility has been part of its downfall tho.

But I still think you can have a good break if you just avoid hat sai gaew and neighbouring area.

Re: Koh Samet - Please Help

Last time I was there they dinged me for the 400 baht. I had my Thai DL with me. Talked to the ranger in Thai. No luck. I usually get the Thai rates at parks. Haven't been back since. Do like the beaches east on the mainland past Ban Phe to Chantaburi. Less crowded and I can drive right up to the bungalows.

Re: Koh Samet - Please Help

Just tell them you teach in Rayong.

Accomodation prices have shot up in Samet, EG AO Pai hut used to be 300B , now it's 800 and they are minging.

You are looking at 1,500 for something clean and decent.

Re: Koh Samet - Please Help

My accountant friend used to know the legal terms and requirements for not paying the Thai rates but I've forgotten all of that now. But it was priceless to see the ranger's mouth drop when a 6'2 falang would give the legal explanations in Thai.

I've heard some beaches at Rayong are nice also, minus the wonderful boat ride.

But if you have a car you can drive right up. And you don't have to pay the Baht to the ranger. If you like boats. Take the boat. Get off, look around, get back on. lol

The area around the NOVOTEL out near (Mae Rim) is nice. The is a part-time teacher whose wive runs an cafe/bar overlooking the ocean near the cape. It is east of Ban Phe just before the road turns north back to Sukhumvit (before Novotel) Very nice. Advertises Full English Breakfasts and has an English or Irish name.

Re: Koh Samet - Please Help

The best thing you can do is go to a quieter beach and take the 400baht return speed boat. Then there are no rangers. As for legal terms, well those cats are just Ban Phe boys....all you'd get is a 'can you eat spicy, you like lady Thai' in return and a hand held out to pay him.

bad move

koh chang is (was, depending on how much the samet bandits have upped their prices) more expensive for accom., but the dining/entertainment is cheaper and better. plus there's no entry fee.

i also like the fact that i can take my motorsai on the ferry for 40 baht and zip up those hills. it's easier to negotiate better room rates if the owner knows you can just jump on your hog and look elsewhere
