I used to live in Thailand from 2001 to 2004. During that time I took a couple of trips to Koh Samet. I remember staying at a decent guest house for about 400THB per night (fan and private bath). I am now living in south China and I am planning a holiday to Koh Samet this July. I am curious to know if the prices have gone up a lot since I have been in China. I plan on staying on KSR for a few nights, then heading to the island for 5-7 nights, then another few nights in the city. Would 45,000THB be enough for two people? My gf and I are planning on staying in nice, but cheap guest houses. We won't be doing too much shopping...just going for nice meals and such...
Also been wondering about the inflation. Have prices on things gone up a lot?

No no no, don't do that if you want to sleep at night. Go to Soi Rambuttri - about 2 minutes walk from KSR. It's a lot quieter and you'll pay about the same amount.

I totally agree. The only reason to go to KSR is to visit the world-renouned university there. For details, PM Jack Straw, who has a PhD from there as well as a BA from the University of Cut and Paste.
For 5-7 nights, Koh Chang would be a far better choice than Koh Samet IMO. Samet's mainly a weekender, and has become over priced in the last few years.
On Koh Chang you'll find a much wider and budget friendly range of accomodation and dining options & more things to do. Better value all around.
Yeah, Samed has lost alot of that charm since your last visit IMO.
Koh Chang never had that charm, but it has alot more things to do. Me and the family were at some bungalo resort... The bungalo was 1000 baht for hot water, fridge, international TV, air conditioning... and we were hard pressed to spend another 1000 a day in eating...
Thanks for the replies. I agree that staying on KSR would not be the best choice. I will look into other guest houses in that general area. Thanks.
As for Samet, could you clarify why you say it's not very good? When I was there I thought it was really nice with less people. Also, I like the proximity to Bangkok, Chonburi, and Rayong. Not to mention that I could easily head to Chang for a few nights if I fancied a change of scenery.
650THB seems expensive. Still, even if I were paying 1,000THB a night, I think it would be worth the money. Living in China is not as good as Thailand (for too many reasons to list here)...but suffice to say that I am very much looking forward to being back in Thailand! I would have to say that the $ goes a lot further in Thailand than it does in China. Overall cost of living in China is probably cheaper (and you can stay in really nice gated communities for very little rent)...but the cost of good food and travel is much higher here.
Been to Koh Chang a few times...my x Thai gfs family have a resort there...could stay for free...but wouldn't feel right seeing how I am bringing my Chinese gf with me...shame.
Considered Ko-Phagnon? Outside of the shitty tourist area, that island is really great. One of my favorites. Thong Nai Pan Yai in the north of the island is a really great beach.
Ko Lipe would be a good choice too (if its open right now). Really love that place...

1000 baht a night would seem like a pretty good deal to me nowadays on Samet, but I've never been partial to backpacker pits. They really do seem to be taking the piss with the prices over there lately.
