Chiang Mai; location of 1 mo stay

Hello All,

My g/f and I have finished our TEFL course here in Koh Samui and we are heading up to Chiang Mai to seek work and explore the city.

I am wanting to book a one month accomodation but I'm unsure as to which location I should pick. My question really comes down to how big is the city and how easy is transportation.

Our first option is Huay Kaew Residence near Huay Kaew Road (apparantly by the Chiang Mai Hotel if that means anything to anybody). This looks like a comfortable and affordable option.

The second option is farther out from the city on Sukgasem Road (I believe near Lanna hospital). This is the option I would go for since the gentlemen on the phone was extremely pleasent and the price is a bit cheaper (although with a few less ammenities). My only worry is that it may be too far out from some of the exploring my g/f and I want to do.

I know the third option is to just book a room for a few days and then commit to a one month stay but I am worried about Songkram coming up and the fact that I could spend %25 of a one month rent in just a few days.

If anybody has any insight it would be greatly appreciated.

Brian

Transportation in CM is more difficult. Their is a pickup bus line on the road by the apartments mentiioned. CM transport is also a bit pricy around this time. They will want 100 baht at night if you don't speak Thai (around festival time). Good luck.

If you don't know the city go for for huay Kaew Residence, simply for the ease of it. You can rent a honda dream for as little as 80 baht p/d along moon muang - the road just inside Thapae Gate. The little wooden hut next to the wooden restaurant 'Bier Stubbe' has them advertised as that price.

Huay Kaew is fine for a month.

Check out if Lanna 3 has a website and do one month rentals. If so, go for them instead.

Thanks for the responses. Huay Kaew didn't have anything available at a decent price but, with the assistance of Thai speaker at our former hotel we were able to get a stay at Fuengfa Place. We're here and it's lovely. Right inside the moat by the nice hospital whose name escapes me.

Now all we have to do is wait for Songkran...and find jobs. I suppose that would be nice.

NAVA Chiang Mai are looking for people.

25K p/m.
Only go to the schools for your classes.
Nava give all the materials/LPs.
Easy gig.
But only pays for the school terms - 9 1/2 months or what ever.

Dara Academy are also looking and it's a far better deal.
Good School.
30K and you've an apartment on campus.
12 month contract.

Find the info for both. Call. Go and visit dressed to the nines with all your info. certs. Talk to the Head teacher/HR people directly.

Re: Chiang Mai; location of 1 mo stay

Thanks for the info D-man. I swear I thought I posted a thank you on Monday night. Anyhoo, My g/f and I have hit the job search hard this week. As of today she has two solid offers and a virtual third offer. I only have one solid offer and two virtual offers...well one I'm not too sure about because it was hard to get a read on the guy. He was pressed for time. Either way all the offers are with private schools and they seem relativly good in terms of working conditions and pay considering we do not have prior teaching experience (although we have very solid resumes and not a single dreadlock between the two of us).

I guess over Songkran we will be agonizing over which job to take...it's a hard knock life. And by the way, Chiang Mai is lovely.

Thanks again D-Man, and should you ever want to meet up for a drink send me a line. I suppose it's time to settle down and make some new friends in this town.
