    Traveling during state of emergency

Is it fine to travel this weekend? Will only be heading to Hua Hin, but do not want to get stuck anywhere. Are busses and trains running normally??

You'll be fine, nothing to worry about. Last I heard the trains and buses were still running but keep checking just in case.

You will have a better chance with a bus. The fastest way would be by a van from Victory Monument.

Northern, northeastern train services resumed; southern services partially resumed

The governor of the State Railway of Thailand said Friday that train services of northern and northeastern routes have fully resumed while southern train services have partially resumed.

SRT Governor Yutthana Thapcharoen said 18 of 64 southern routes have resumed after the SRT held talks with the SRT labour union.

Re: Traveling during state of emergency

I was in Hua Hin the week before last (it's small, isn't it?) when the problems with PAD kicked off. I was thinking of coming back by train on the Saturday morning, but when I walked up to the station to check times on the Friday, the services had just been restricted earlier that day.

Apart from having one evening class cancelled last Tuesday after the chap was killed down town, I have had nothing else affect me. I was pottering around downtown most of yesterday and a few hours today and saw not a hint of any problems. In my view, it's safe to go anywhere in Thailand, apart from perhaps Government House and the surrounding area at night!

As to buses/busses, it's an either/or situation, it seems. The traditional rule when pluralising a word that ends in a vowel then a single consonant is to double the consonant and add 'es', but there are exceptions and irregular plurals. Dictionary.com says 'A plural of bus', which implies that there is more than one possible plural, otherwise they'd say 'THE plural of bus', wouldn't they?

To my mind, 'busses' looks clumsy and inelegant and I would always use 'buses', but if someone else wants to demonstrate their ignorance of irregular plurals, so be it.

Having said that, the gerund 'bussing' (eg, 'The company are bussing people to work') looks much better than 'busing', which seems too much like 'boozing' to me.

Horses for courses, I reckon, though I'd go with Hippo on this one. He's usually right, if somewhat delightfully acerbic at times.

If I was going to take issue with anything in the OP, I'd take issue with 'Is it fine to ...' Surely 'Is it safe to', or 'Is it OK to', or 'Is it sensible to'. Better still 'Do people think it is safe to ...? '

    Over there:

The OP asked a reasonable question given the political situation in Thailand so it is best if the grammar pedants are confined to the classroom.

fair enough, but letting us know where they had been moved to would have been polite.

Re: Traveling during state of emergency

Well, happy to report that I had a nice, sun-filled weekend on the beach with no problems. Took the mini van there and a bus back. I think a few of the busses weren't running, since the schedule had them coming every half hour and they didn't seem that frequent.

On another note, the minivan is the way to go!! 200 baht for the minivan, 180 baht for the bus. The minivan gets to Hua Hin an hour quicker for only 20 baht more! Much nicer. Also, only had to wait about 5 minutes for the van and over an hour to get on the bus back.

I know train and van service between Ayutthaya and Bangkok is running unimpeded.
