    A startup guesthouse

    Hi everybody!

My friend and I are heading to Bangkok in a few weeks from Korea in order to find a job. Just wondering, do any of you knowledgable folks know of a decent guesthouse we could stay at during our search? We don't mind sharing a room, but has to have A/C and a decent bathroom. Preferably a place in a good area with some things to do, or not far from things to do.

    Any help greatly appreciated

As much as it pains me to say,.....Khao San Road <shiver> has quite the array and selection of guesthouses.

    thanks for the quick response.

I already know about KSR having stayed there a few times. I hate it with a passion though, so would prefer a different area... even if it means laying out an extra few hundred baht. Wouldn't mind somewhere near KSR though, away from the strip.

This place is popular, about 15 mins walk north of KSR, but close to a large market, express boat stop, etc. The food is good and so are the in house herbal massages. Nice choice of rooms for varying budgets, no noisy videos, a relaxing and fairly quiet place, apart from the early morning market tuk-tuks. To get to Siam Square there are buses or taxis or the long express boat ride to Saphan Thaksin BTS, or Phayathai or Rachathewi BTS are a 60 Baht taxi ride away.

Their Phuket place is also really nice.

Bloody hell. 300 baht, or rather from 300 baht for a dorm bed in a room with 10 dorm beds and a shared bathroom. Is that how much these things cost nowadays? That sounds scandalous to me.

Have a look on Soi Rambutri, close to Khao San and not so noisy. Or try Phra Athit, plenty of reasonable places there. Dont stay on Khao San, you went get any sleep.

yeah, 300 for a dorm bed is expensive but 500 for a double with fan isn't too bad, or 400 for a sin gle with fan
you can certainly get cheaper, but this is a nice place in a nice area

fair enough but the OP is here on what I presume will be a serious job hunt. When you're spucing yourself up for a job interview (hair gel, razor and foam, windsor knot, cuff-links) you can't do a decent job of it without air-con.

No, you're right. I think they'd be better off in Soi Kasemsan near Siam Square for job hunting.

Shanti lodge is relatively expensive. Ive stayed there a lot over the years and always surpised at my bill by the end - however, lovely staff, amazing food...Thewet gets a but stinky tho and the market is prone to having unannounced parties at 4 am.

Sukhamvit can be slightly pricey, but if you look hard enough on the internet, you can places with the desired amenities for 500-700 baht nightly. These would be hotels, but there's lots of kickin' things to do in Suhkamvit.

I made the mistake of looking for work from a guesthouse when I first came as a potential employee in LOS and I can tell you that if you want to be organized and prepared to look for work, then you want to be isolated from backpackers.

    Re: A startup guesthouse

I am in the ROK myself. I am heading to Thailand on September 1. I can't even begin to express my joy about leaving this place. 58 days to go. Before I get off on a tangent about all of that, let me tell you about my plan (or, former plans).

If I were you, I would think carefully. Guesthouses suck. Internet is the key to finding a job and researching those jobs before signing on the dotted line. Just like Korea, Thailand has it's fair share of shady schools. You are best doing your homework. This will require the internet. How are you going to find that lovely school where you will work? How are you going to locate the address?

In Thailand, you are going to have to hit the pavement if you want a decent gig (both kinds - English and Thai). This will require you to look somewhat professional and have a resume and photos to match your hopefully charming personality. This takes a lot of work.

What are you going to do at night while you are finding this job? A fridge would go miles for you to pass the evening away talking about your prospects for the future with your friend. A couple of cold beers at a cheap price can help to offset the sheer horror of wandering around Bangkok in business attire checking out jobs.

If you want to stay at some KSR, be my guest. You are going to be far from everything. Taking a Khlong Taxi to MBK while wearing a suit doesn't sound like my idea of fun.

So, check it out man. You need to do a bit more homework. Find yourself a place that you can stay for a month. I have done some research myself. I have shortlisted some places that you can find on my thread.

http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/houses-...endations.html (One Month in Bangkok ~ Looking for Recommendations)

I am wishing you and your friend the best of luck. Bangkok or bust ........
I believe, if we take habitual drunkards as a class, their heads and their hearts will bear an advantageous comparison with those of any other class. There seems ever to have been a proneness in the brilliant and warm-blooded to fall into this vice. ~ Abraham Lincoln
