What's so bad about bang Saen?
Where to start?
1) Oafish pissed up Thais....at 9 in the morning.
2) Rubbish everywhere, especially in the sea.
3) Tyres, Endless crappy deckchairs.
4) Just right beside a busy road = no charm.
5) That 'promernade' they've been touting as somehow charming is just a bare concrete road.
6) Saw a kid in the three minutes I was on the beach taking a shit right there on the beach - much to the amusement of the adults around.
The one 'good' thing about it is you can park right up near the beach. This meant I could get to the 7-11 to the ATM and got the hell out. Spent a total of about 15 minutes there. It's an absolute dump.
Hua Hin has gone downhill badly over the last 10 years, but still has some charm left.
Any reports on Cha Am?

I can't think of any beach resort on the mainland that I'd bother with for its natural attractions.
You've got to get out onto the islands these days imo.
Other than buying seafood from hundreds of vendors lined up next to the beach, what is there to do there? I thought the beach sucked. One big expensive hotel and everything else grunge accommodations. Nightlife zero.Originally Posted by kenkannif
I can add another - when I went there, the one and only time, it was a couple of months after I had moved to BKK. I went with some Thai friends on a long weekend, I can't remember which holiday it was. We had intended to go to Pattaya but the traffic was so bad that we (they) decided on Bang Saen. It was like a ghetto mob scene. Extremely crowded and noisy. Also, me being the ONLY farang female, I was harassed and followed by drunk thai guys the whole time we were there. There was only one other farang on the beach and it was a big fat guy with his Thai wife and kids. I honestly felt like I was going to be raped while I was there. I just sat on the beach and covered myself with my towel.
There are a couple of nice beaches down near me in Ban Chang, Phala beach being the best, clear water, clean white sand and some good seafood restaurants.
Yeah, your Thai friends were really looking out for you when they made that call.I've never seen a beach community with less charm or appeal than Bang Saen.
Just look at a google map of the gulf of thailand. from pattaya to bangkok and over to the western shore, that area is one big collection of filth.
I know of one, but you'd have to pay me to find out where....

sounds like it's ideal for a family holiday.
I spent a day there and liked it. It's nicer than Hua Hin and much quieter. Reasonable beach. Not much to do though.

My comparison points aren't grotty UK holiday last resorts.
I love the sea (this weekend was my first time swimming in the ocean-ever) and the island was beautiful. But getting there was nothing short of a nightmare - and getting home was even worse. Almost made it not worth it. Next weekend I'm heading up to the hills northeast of Kabin on my motorcai. Freedom. I hope to find some cool spots...waterfalls, etc.
I'm coming to the (hasty) conclusion that Thailand is not a place for a single foreign woman. I wish I had known this before I came. Do any of you have white female friends living in Thailand? What have their experiences been like? And Natalie I'd like to hear what you have to say too!

Most move on, I still have a few, but it hasn't seemed easy for them.
They signed up to a girls only meeting thing in Bangkok once where just farang girls meet up at a restaurant, prob to discuss how much Thai women suck and the farang men here are all old and fat.
