How do you get one and is it worth getting one?

it depends on how far you are going - just a few stops and there is nothing in it (i think you could even lose 5bht)... after that it is a clear saving. I don't think there are any cards that can be used with mrt also, but have often thought it would be a good idea.
don't know what it's called but i have a bts card that i just put money on when i need to. probably it's a smart pass? i have one for the mrt too but they're separate.

Everytime I get on it I reflect on the pain the arse that was commuting before the BTS.
You go to the window tell them you want a smartpass(no idea how to say it in thai prob just pronounce it stupid) You put 30 baht down and you load it up, the 30baht is to rent the card since its the property of the bts. You can only load 100 baht on it atm they wont let you put 50 or 20 iono about more than 100.
You also get coupons some times when you are loading it(they skip me all the time but give them to my thai-american wife....)
Going from Wongwian yai to Mochit is only 40 baht no idea what it is with the old cards.
Oh and most stations have a smartpass lane only entrance, i love seeing thai people blindly shove their coin cards into it and than realizing after a few tries that they need to move over.

the MRT is an engineering marvel, too. BKK is the least likely place to build a subway coz it's basically a swamp. as engineering goes it's as brilliant as building Suvarnabhumi where all the extra water used to go was stupid.

...I don't know...I easily use my rides up before any 30 day limit...
