    Touring Isan; where to go?

Looks like I will have more holiday than I thought this term due to finishing all my prep early. I am keen to see the province where the majority of my favorite food comes from! What places are worth going? I am been told Khon Kaen is a lot of fun. This true?

I hear the same about KHon Kaen, but have only passed through but Nong Khai isn'[t too far up the road and is a reaally good spot.
Go to KK and then on to NK

Much of Issan is flat and dull like Udonthani.

I took an interesting bicycle ride from Nongkhai to Chiang Khan and then Loei last holiday that I highly recommend - you can do it by motorcycle or car. The road from Nongkhai to Chiang Khan follows the Mekhong River and is very scenic. There are homestays and inexpensive 'resorts' along the way.

Loei province has two national parks - Phu Rhua and Phu Khadung - both worthwhile. Loei province is hilly or 'mountainous' so the scenery is interesting.

Do you have a motorcycle or car?

Covers a big, hot and mostly featureless area. Do you really want to go on a tour there, OP?

    Rent out a motorbike.

    At least a Ninja 650.

If going from BKK then first stop Prasat Hin Pii Mai in Khorat.

Then South-East to Phanom Rung in Buriram and along the Cambodian Border to Phra Wihan in Sisaket.

Follow the Maekhong all the way up and around to Loei area. Then head south through the mountainous National Parks of Petchabun et all.
