I’m planning on going to Laos, partly to extend my VISA. Planning to travel through Laos (and possibly Vietnam), then come out in Northern Thailand. Looking for good tips.
First, I was wondering if I can buy a calling card or something that I can use with my Thai cell phone in Laos. When I was in Cambodia, I made a call and it cost me pretty. So, now I’m trying to figure out how to use my mobile in countries other than Thailand.
Also wondering about best routes into Laos, and possibly from Laos into Vietnam (Not so interested in HCMC, as it sounds a bit hectic. More likely interested in Hanoi or someplace like Da Nang). To Vientienne, read I can take a plane to Nong Kai for $35 then for another 100b take a bus to Vientienne. But three may be some good stuff in more Southern Laos.
Should I do the VISA stuff here, or at their borders? In Cambodia I did it at the border.
Yeah, I just read through a bunch of the Lonely Planet SE Asia in a bookstore this afternoon. Didn’t buy it ‘cause it was 1,125b. Wanna’ see if I can find it cheaper.
You can download all of Lonely planets info for free. Do go to Luang Prabang. VIP buses from Vientiene 24 seaters. Break it up in 2 days. I did my ph calls from the agencies just like in BKK. CHEAP Visa at the border. Hanoi is great though cool now. Where you see locals eating on the sidewalk ,drinking large jars of beer ,go there cheap and COLD BEER. Stay in the old quarter N of lake email me for more info
Why would you assume that. KK gives more advice than any two us us on this board.
I assume he was stating that an agency on KS Road know of a cheaper 15 day visa which might appeal to the OP.
Damn. Wow.

Sorry Ran that info off in a hurry, and a little into my cups. I meant that the phone calls were cheap. Last I went visas were $30 15 days and could be extended
 Vietnam was cool in November. It got quite cool at night. Still, Hanoi was worth it. I actually biked it around, which was okay. The History museum, the Revolution museum and the Army Museum are worth seeing. There it this weird display of parts of American and French aircraft in a sort of big pile,is the best I can describe it. A Vietnamese female soldier is pulling what appears to be the tailfin of a B-52. The Citadel is there too. That is the Army museum. The citadel is this old tower, you can climb up for a great view of the city. Wierdly, across the street is a statue of Lennin. Underneath it, young Viets were breakdancing. I thought this an intriguing contrast. Walking around Hanoi is quite rewarding too. I recommend it if you have not been there. They have good coffee chains too.
