Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?

Recently watched 'The 11th Hour, hosted by Leonard DiCaprio. The show is somewhat of a documentary, where many specialists in the field give their opinions on global warming, and its effects. Very interesting, and scary at the same time.

7/10

A lovely and most beautiful filum mate....I think that was Sellers' fave role/film as well (if I remember correctly).

I saw 'Baby Mama' the other day. I thought it was pretty funny. It had a great cast.

Starting Out In The Evening (2007)

An aging, sickly author, Leonard Schiller, is writing his last novel. He doesn't have a lot of time yet and hasn't written in years. Most of his books are out of print. Meanwhile, a young, attractive grad student named Heather is writing her graduate thesis on him. She convinces him to take precious time away from his writing (which takes several meetings of persuasion) to let her interview him. Heather is inspired by his writing and takes a romantic interest in him.

5/10. And five out of ten is probably generous. This is shades of 'Finding Forrester' but whereas one is a Hollywood motion picture and has Sean Connery in it, this is a Cannes film festival award nominee and no doubt has loads of arty types talking in the bar afterwards and telling each other they felt it worked on four levels.

This is a film that my Mom would describe as 'a bit slow'. It's not a film you would rent for a night in with 'the lads' and at times, you find yourself desperately itching to grab the remote control and fast forward it a bit. Just to see if the old codger can blow his beans for one last time with a young impressionable university student. Perhaps he did but I kind of skipped the last twenty minutes.
A lively confident, slightly annoying student with gingery hair worships an aging writer whose books have long been the stuff of bargain bins.

The IMDB website put it quite beautifully -'Not for everyone'

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?

A 'blocked' writer, somewhat over the hill, ie the guy who wrote the screenplay, finds a frisky student wants to get it on despite his decrepitude.

Shit, can you imagine trying to sell that to the studios?

Maybe he was Jewish and that helped things along.

This review leaves one question unanswered.

Why does Bangkok Phil watch so much crap?

I mean shit phil, I know you're a Brummie but just 'cos it's free......

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?

The Bucket List. Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson.
I love watching Jack cause he's always so maliciously smarmy and non-PC. In this one, he and Morgan Freeman, whose characters are total opposites, both are in hospital when told they only have 6 months to live. From disliking each other, they gradually discover a bond and go off on a trip to do all the things they'd always wanted to do before they 'kicked the bucket'.
The ending is predictible, but the start is really good and the middle is also strong. I enjoyed it a lot, actually.

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?

Jumpers.
Better than I expected actually. The idea of someone who can jump through time just by thinking about their destination was used quite well and the effects were good. Plot was predictible, but you get that. Scenery ranged from depressing to very scenic. Action got a bit hard to follow at times it as so fast, but then my eyesight is slowing down nowdays.

Perfume, Story of a Murderer

An original concept of shooting a horror movie from the perspective of the murderer. Makes you sympathise with a guy who is killing girls for the sake of making the perfect scent. The orgy scene at the end is quite a sight, and not to be missed.
Best movie I've seen in a long time
9/10

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?

^ I thought it wasn't that good, but then the original novel by Patrick Süskind is one of my favourites and very filums have ever done justice to the vision of the book.

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?

The Other Bolwyn Girl.
Much better than I expected. Has love, lust, ambition, desire, deceit, treachery and betrayal.
Best acting I've seen from Natalie Portman who takes Anne from flirty girl to determined seducer to triumphant mistress to increasing desperation as it all falls apart to a final dignified defiance at her execution.
Scarlett Johannsen proves she can act, as well as look gorgeous, as Mary who loves Henry, has his child Elizabeth, is shunned by him for Anne, forgives Anne and has to watch her beheaded.
Eric Bana gives us a Henry who seems to have his blood supply permanently diverted to the wrong head, causing him to make dopey decisions to satisfy his lust and obsession with having a son.
The supporting cast are also good and the movie looks good.
8/10

The Counterfeiters

True story of the Nazi attempt to flood the US and British economies with fake currency. They used Jewish inmates to do the counterfeiting. Great story. 8/10
