The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)
Scarlet Johansson, Natalie Portman

A sumptuous and sensual tale of intrigue, romance and betrayal set against the backdrop of a defining moment in European history: two beautiful sisters, Anne and Mary Boleyn, driven by their family's blind ambition, compete for the love of the handsome and passionate King Henry VIII.

8/10. According to reviews and historians it was factually inaccurate but who cares when you've got two on-screen sizzlers like Portman and Johansson.
Good movie. I enjoyed it.

My Blueberry Nights (2008)
Norah Jones, Jude Law

A young woman takes a soul-searching journey across America to resolve her questions about love while encountering a series of offbeat characters along the way.

3/10. Lots of moody jazz and obscure camera angles but none of that is covering up the fact that the gorgeous Jude Law (oh he's so handsome say all the ladies) has made some real turkeys in his film career. This is another one. Arty-farty arthouse bollocks with extra art. And who wants to watch Norah Jones in a lead role?
Another Cannes Film Festival offering. Say no more.

Juno (2007)

Faced with an unplanned pregnancy, an offbeat young woman makes an unusual decision regarding her unborn child.

7/10. The critics loved this one, in fact many put it in their top ten films of the year.
I was pleasantly surprised. The script was witty and the girl in the lead role was excellent. Nice film in an "I've just sat through thirty minutes of Bluberry Nights and desperately need something to entertain me" kind of way.

Overall it's not bad. I'd give it a 3/5...just.

The story's ridiculously complicated considering the film's about a guy running around dressed up as a bat! The action's ok. I don't quite understand what Batman's abilities are. He can basically fly in it. At one point his love interest falls of a building, so he dives after her, grabs her as she's falling, they crash into a car and, lo and behold, they're both fine. So he's invelnerable, is he? Anyone who's in his vicinity is also invulnerable too? Just curious.

The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Ashton Kucher

A young man blocks out harmful memories of significant events of his life. As he grows up, he finds a way to remember these lost memories and a supernatural way to alter his life.

8/10. My wife has been pestering me for ages to watch this one and it was surprisingly good. Possibly a little too fast-paced in parts but a good intertwining of the different stories and flashbacks, etc.
A low-budget sequel was made in 2006 but got very bad reviews so I won't bother with that.
I thought Ashton Kucher did very well in the lead role and wondered why we haven't seen more of him in movies. His profile on IMDB shows that in fact he does most of his work behind the camera rather than in front of it. I didn't know he was married to Demi Moore either (15 years his senior)

Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman in a scene from....
Charlie Wilson's War

Based on a true story. You think we could make all this up?
A stiff drink. A little mascara. A lot of nerve. Who said they couldn't bring down the Soviet empire.
When the world wasn't watching, they changed it forever.

I liked it. Well-written, superbly acted. Not full of twists and turns or anything like that, but very human, and very true to life. 8/10

Couldn't agree more Charlie.
It was so cheesy, so corny, you almost had to watch it from behind the sofa but that was very much its appeal. Who could forget Batman kicking the rubber shark as he dangled precariously above the ocean on a helicopter rope-ladder.

I read an interview with Adam West some time ago and he says that he still feels his was the real Batman. I wouldn't argue with that.

Adam West and Burt Ward's slightly wooden acting aside, the baddies were top notch. Frank Gorshin was a brilliant Riddler and no one played The Penguin better than Burgess Meredith.

Danny De Vito my arse.

^^ Philip Seymour Hoffman was very good in the role he played, and the movie was OK too.

Classic film!
I remember putting it on the video for an old girlfriend back in the UK and she sobbed for the entire second half of the movie. Not tears trickling down cheeks but uncontrollable sobbing - so moved was she by Attenborough's performance and the hopelessness of Timothy Evans' (Hurt) situation. It's a film that stays long in the memory.

Charlie,

In a similar genre I suppose, did you catch Pierrepoint with Timothy Spall from 2007?
The story of Britain's last ever hangman.

Thirded. It's the one and only for me. It was so unselfconscious and naturally done. These new ones it seems like they're constantly trying to rewrite the character, make him somehow believable or possible. Adam West is the original and best.
