Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
You see, I've made The Wife watch so many horror filums and ghost filums that she now enjoys them and appears to be immune to them so I've had to alter my strategy somewhat. Irreversible freaked her out, so next up is either Girl Next Door or Taxidermia, oh decisions, decisions....

Brilliant film.
When it comes to playing a hard, streetwise Cockney geezer, ray Winstone is in a class of his own. I always enjoyed Jamie Foreman's performance in that film though. He plays the role of 'Ray's best mate' to perfection. The opening sequence dialogue in the working men's club is just so realistic.

Actually nothing like that really.
Keith and Candice-Marie are a middle-class vegan couple looking for a quiet camping holiday in Dorset, but fail at every single turn. It's one of the funniest films you'll ever watch and testimony to Mike Leigh's writing genius.
Belly laughs all the way!
Rita, Sue and Bob Too! (1986)
George Costigan
Realistic story of working class Yorkshire life. Two schoolgirls have a sexual fling with a married man. Serious and light-hearted by turns.
9/10. I finally downloaded a decent copy of this little British gem from the 1980's. Worth watching just to see the late great Willie Ross playing Sue's drunken father.
I love so many moments in this film.

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
Isn't the thing with Mike Leigh though that it's basically all improvised, as in that he won't have actually written fuck all past a basic outline for the film and thereafter it's a collaborative enterprise?
Nil By Mouth is one of the best films I've ever seen. Gary Oldman should write and direct more.

As long as she doesn't go to the local gun dealer and the cops to purchase some bullets to say she wants to "Hunt for some hogs" you're OK.

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
Dark Honeymoon (2008)
Roy Scheider and a whole bunch of talentless pieces of wood.
A man marries a seductive woman after a brief but intense relationship. During their honeymoon on the Oregon coast, however, he uncovers the terrible truth about his new wife.
0/10. F***ing abysmal. If you're thinking of downloading it - please don't.
How has Tia Carrere made a career out of acting? She's not even good looking. And Daryl Hannah has carved out a whole career from once being a mermaid. Now she's just a slightly bloated middle-aged woman who couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. Dreadful script. Wooden acting. Slasher flick silliness. Drivel.

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
I used to hate French movies. I always thought they were pretentious, but lately I find myself enjoying them, even the ones with the most stupid storylines... and some are quite stupid, but for some bizarre reason, still very fun to watch, like....
Bon Cop, Bad Cop
A dead body is found between Ontario and Quebec border (literally). Two cops from each province must come together and solve the murder.
La moustache
A middle-aged man who has had his Moustache for the past 15 years decides to shave it off. He gets pretty pissed off when nobody (even his wife) notices the change. This gets him paranoid and eventually crazy. I guess it's a movie about identity crisis.
Familia
Nice movie about family values and deceiving appearances.

You can add to that Microcosmos, which is all about insects and their little worlds. It's very interesting to watch the special effects in the film. 10 out of 10!
There's a little French speaking in the beginning, but 99% of the film is music and sound effects. If you like nature films, you'll love this one.

I saw the first half hour of this, until the dodgy copy we brought back from LOS locked up and refused to play. Judging on the first half hour, I'd say don't bother with the rest.
Just picture a bunch of grimy people slopping around in the mud, muttering incomprehensibly to each other and chasing animated mammoths, and you get the idea.

Well, I saw this on Blu-Ray, so it's not your copy - it was a total waste of $6.29 rental. This is the same guy who directed Independence Day, so I should have known better.

I've got to agree with all three of you. From Roland Emmerich I expected a much, much better film. Has to be the worst thing he has done.
I watched it all the way through, but that was only because I had insomnia and a good soju buzz on.
Mel Gibson's Apocalypto was much, much better.
Oh, and I just saw Charlie Wilson's War. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is going to be the greatest character actor of his generation.

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
Saw another Ray Winston movie - Sexy Beast. This time Ray plays a retired gangster living in peacefully in Spain until he's asked to do one more job, by the brilliant Ben Kingsley who definetly makes this movie. "you calling me a cunt, Gal you fat bastard". When of the best scenes is when Ben's character is trying to explain to the Spanish police why he got of the plane. Tres amusing.
Also got 'Face' on the download, which is another good one starring Ray and Robert Carlyse.
