The Duchess - Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes.
8/10.
Knightley is in fine form as the warm blooded Duchess who has to put up with a lot from her philandering husband the Duke, who Fiennes makes about as attractive as a dead fish. While undoubtedly a girls' movie, it's still a good thing and well worth seeing. The wife loved it, of course.
If 6 of the 7 dwarves were not Happy, does that prove that dwarves are generally an unhappy lot?
Bangkok Dangerous (2008)
Nicholas Cage
A hitman arrives in Bangkok for a series of 'jobs'.
0/10. My first ever zero out of ten. I was going to give it one point but then I thought - a point for what exactly? How appallingly bad was this? I mean apart from the awful acting and the story-line as thin as a piece of cardboard, do they have someone standing by who's an expert on Thailand and Thai culture and who's job it is to say "no that wouldn't happen"? I know we're meant to suspend belief a little where movies are concerned but the sight of the mafia guy gliding along on his long-tailed boat at the floating market while two whores nibbled on his ear had me covering my face with embarrassment. I don't know who I was most embarrassed for - probably Nicholas Cage. I can't believe anyone's movie career could be so f***ed that they would say yes to this one. 93 minutes of utter cack!
Wall-E (2007)
In the distant future, a small waste collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.
6/10. Perhaps I just wasn't in the mood. It's very well done, very clever, as you'd expect from Pixar but it just didn't hit the spot. I was disappointed after all the rave reviews I'd read. Enjoyable in places but Toy Story it certainly ain't.
I still blow the dust off this one every couple of years and it still has me in stitches. An absolute classic! If you ever needed proof of Mike Leigh's genius then this is it. So many great moments but my favorite is the one where Keith shouts up to Candice Marie standing on top of the cliff to let her know that she's standing on sedimentary limestone.

The worst job in Thailand must be the man who has to sit down with a blue marker pen and mark a number two on the two-baht coins to stop people thinking they are one-baht coins.

You make it sound so bad, Phil, that I must see it now!![]()
Sur votre bicyclette, mate.
Burn After Reading (2008)
Brad Pitt. John Malkovitch, George Clooney
A disk containing the memoirs of a CIA agent ends up in the hands of two unscrupulous gym employees who attempt to sell it.
8/10. I read some very poor reviews of this. The Coen Brothers can churn out a bad movie? Surely not. I needn't have worried. Thought it was excellent. great performances by Malkovitch and Clooney and so what if Frances McDormand carried on in her Fargo vein. She was terrific in this as well. Great storyline, laugh out loud funny, it kept me entertained from first minute to last.
^^ Jon, there was a thread on here that discussed this movie. It's great to have Bangkok Phil's review of the film but maybe 0/10 is being a little harsh as he admits to watching the entire movie.

I've watched three films today.
1st for my son - The.Chronicles.Of.Narnia-Prince.Caspian - he gave it 7/10. My 8y/o enjoyed it but found it difficult to understand at times.
2nd was 'The Bucket List'. 8/10 - A well made film.
3rd was 'The Midnight Meat Train' - Bloody to say the least but started off well. Unfortunately it failed to bring things together in the end. 6/10.
Casino Royale - 4/5
Fantastic action flick. Craig has a real presence. Highly watchable stuff.
We kept waiting
Still nothing changes
It's a shame

Yes, I feel I'm rising above your highly controversial polemic.
To a calmer place.
A place where I can be arsed about phuketbound's favourite cats etc.
