Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
Lust, caution.
At the opening they were speaking quickly and the subtitles were on rapid fire and it was all I could do to concentrate on them and try to keep up, but after a short while I almost didn't notice that I was reading them. Beautifully filmed, set in 1940s cosmopolitan Shanghai (where farangs are notably employed in some service occupations) under Japanese and collaborator control, this often tense film centres around a resistance plot to kill a leading collaborator. Several graphic scenes of rough sex and nudity might deter the Thai censors. No happy Hollywood ending either. Really enjoyed it.
Well, have you checked out the refurbished Cinema City? Loved it. My new favourite cinema.

3:10 to Yuma.
I'm a sucker for a good Western, and IMO this was one.
Good acting, storyline, and cinematography.
Check it out if you get the chance.

Beerfest from the Broken Lizard team that made Super Troopers. A good film, lots of laughs and lots of tits too.

I watched Bridge to Terabithia last night, and quite enjoyed it. My wife however thought it was stupid. Different stokes I guess

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
The Kite Runner.
Set mostly in Afghanistan and partly in the US, taking us through the lead up to the Russian invasion and onto Taliban times, with heavy use of subtitles, particularly in the first half when the main players are in their childhood, this film has a lot of sadness, regret and guilt and I don't know what came over me but I was in tears on several occasions All along I was wondering how bored my daughter would be with all the subtitles and serious subject matter but she loved it and the first thing she said to me at the end was 'I cried 3 or 4 times and so did the woman next to me'. What a wuss I am, eh? A big softy really
Very entertaining kite flying scenes, too (yes, really ). Not quite what I expected, but it made a bigger impression on me than any film I can think of for a while.

Eagle vs Shark.
Independent NZ film. Essentially, it's a geek love story. I can't remember the director's name, but I think we'll see more from him or her in the future.

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
My local video shop was having a clearance sale of old stock and I managed to pick up two of my all-time favourite filums on DVD for a combined price of 120B. I watched first, Clive Barkers Hellraiser, last night and it still looks every bit as good as I remember it, the special effects in parts look rather dated (made in '87) but on the whole still look better than any of this CGI crap that we are subjected to these days. I'll watch the second, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, next week.

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
Just watched Howl's Moving Castle, an animated film by Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli.
Magical stuff, he and his art team are maestros of the manga film art form.
My son loved it and is now watching it again.
Bought A Scanner Darkly and Rouge Assassin at the same time but I will have to wait until the boy goes to sleep to watch one.

Sounds like a good one to me.
I just saw "The DaVinci Code" for the first time. I am glad to see that Tom Hanks did not believe that Jesus was married. It was almost as if Hanks were a righteous fugitive living in a foreign country who knew the truth about everything and didn't have to smoke anything to know it. Hanks was a Jesus "true story" arguer.
Also saw Van Damme's "The Hard Corps." Was a good flick by van Damme. He's truly a legend. All the way from Europe to emigrate to the States and go for the gold and the American Dream, which is still in America.
One last one I saw was "Gone." About a British tourist and an American fighting over a woman (hehe...imagine that). Anyways, they fight to the death, literally. I won't spoil it though for someone who may want to watch it. Let's just say "fem power" here.

I'm a big fan of Miyazaki but I much preferred Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke over Howl's Moving Castle. Not sure why, I think it just lacked a little heart perhaps.
I'm not sure if it's Manga by the way. Manga is just the japanese word for comics and it may even now be a specific brand too. Generally Manga films will have been based on Manga cartoons and comics and will often bear the brand name Manga on the DVD. The Manga stuff most will have heard of is Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Yu-Gi-Oh! and the like. The aces south korean flick Oldboy was based on a japanese Manga, likewise old kung fu stuff like Lady Snowblood and Lone Wolf and Cub.
Howl's is straight-up anime based on a fantasy novel by some british author. Kudos for showing it to your kid. This stuff is as deserving of an audience if not more so than dross like Shrek 3 or Bee Movie.
