Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
Just wondered if there was any interest in a continuing thread about opinions/reactions on movies seen recently?
To test the waters, I'll drop in a few comments about The Departed.
I'd rate it seven out of 10. Jack Nicholson steals the show as the disgustingly horrible crime boss, whose character just reveals ever deeper layers of awfulness as the movie progresses. Jack is just wallowing in it. It's disgustingly fascinating - I couldn't take my eyes off him.
Matt Damon is good as the cop who turns bad while pretending to be good. I like him.
Leonardo di Caprio comes from the opposite end as the undercover cop who is pretending to be bad while actually he's on the good side. He spends most of the movie with his brows furrowed. I'd rate the performances by di Caprio and Damon as on a similar level, but neither is as deeply rendered as Nicholson's.
The movie is very very violent - most of the leading characters are dead by the end. The main survivor, the psychiatrist who becomes the lover of both Damon and di Caprio's characters, was unconvincing to me. Her acting was OK but the character just didn't gel for me.
The movie is also plastered with almost every known swearword. How you feel about that is up to you of course.
Its a quality movie, but don't go along for the laughs.
Over to you...

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
I quite enjoyed 'The Departed', di Caprio is certainly coming on as an interesting actor and, because I've always suspected he seems a slimey little bastard, Matt Damon playing a slimey little bastard worked well for me.
A few problems though; Nicholson playing Nicholson...yawn. The story had glaring similarities to Scorsese's Kings of New York, di Caprio infiltrates criminal gang and earns the affections of psychotic gang leader, and if anyone actually believes anybody speaks and acts like Wahlberg's character well then you've watched too many Scorsese movies! I did find his perverse and totally over-the-top performance amusing though.
I'd love to see the original, "Infernal Affairs".

 Agreed.
Just saw Departed. I did not like it very much. I think too many good actors in one movie is overkill. I will see any movie with Jack though. He is one of my favorites. Same goes for all the other actors in this movie.

Re: Movies - what you seen and was it any good?
Just watched National Treasure with Nicholas Cage, which was a big mistake, as it's possibly one of the worst movies I've ever seen, a pale imitation of Raiders of the Lost Ark without any of the redeeming features. Only saw it because the wife chose it. Do not, under any circumstances, buy a copy of this movie (anyone want to buy mine? - I'll pay you to take it away)

The Quiet American - Michael Caine, Brendan Fraser
Well acted and directed character drama set agianst the collapse of the French colonial period in Vietnam and the entrance of the CIA. Great perfomance by Caine and Fraser was good too. The young Vietnamese girl playing Caine's lover is hot and handled the role well. It has made me want to go and find Grahame Green's novel to read.
Agree about V for Vendetta. Loved it. Watched it ten times now.
