I had to dig up this thread.. I just started watching Dexter, and this show is pretty damn good. I can't believe that KK's post wasn't replied to until now...
Yeah, it's a nice bit of fiction.
There was a different Dexter in mind, when this username was chosen,
It's a great show. It could have ended after the first season nicely, but it didn't. But never fear - season 2 is excellent as well. 8.5/10

I'm on the third episode of the second season.. I'm very suspicious of the woman from NA.

Things get better... I really hope Dex leaves Rita for the hottie!! Plus she gets his dark side.. the side he can't show around Rita!! The show is getting great
Well Episode 8 gives you the impression that that's not what's going to happen. Still the interaction with the hottie has evolved the character and now some serious shit is about to happen. Episode 9 should be available tomorrow, I can't wait.

I can't suss out why the opening depicts Dex to be a cannibal and the "previously on Dexter" portion goes as far as 5 episodes into the past at times. (?)

I think that's just a purposeful misleading piece of ham (the color has been altered slightly). If you notice they use a "Blood Orange" as well, which also has a gory look to it. I think they are just trying to create a certain dichotomy with the mundane appearance of Dex's life.
The long intro's are a bit much for me too, but I'm watching the shows back to back, maybe people in the states have a much shorter retention span then we do.
