    Documentary Suggestions

For whatever reason, I'm absurdly out of the loop regarding factual film and television, so suggestions would be appreciated. I'm not too fussed on the multitudes of political conspiracy theory guff that's out there right now to be honest. I'll watch that stuff on occasion but I prefer stuff that's solidly based in fact as opposed to speculation and whatnot.

I've been catching up on Louis Theroux's new Law and Disorder series this week. The first episode about Philadelphia was a little weak with very little new insight, but maybe that was more a case of my having an encyclopaedic knowledge of The Wire which essentially deals with the very same subject matter as it was the show being poor. The last episode about Johannesburg was much better. I don't know why, but I'd never pictured a South African city to look quite so...Western, as Johannesburg. Anyway, a great insight into modern inner-city South Africa.

Thanks. I've already got the Esoteric recommendation bookmarked and I seem to rewatch The Power of Nightmares as well as Curtis' The Century of Self, but I'd forgotten all about Ghosts of Rwanda and the other two will do nicely as well. Cheers.

    Re: Documentary Suggestions

I would love to make a documentary about the exploitation of Burmese workers in Thailand. It would be easy to make and would shock a lot of people.

I wouldn't mind pushing the envelope and making a documentary about Elvis. I doubt I would ever be able to return to these sunny shores however.

Back on topic: I recently watched Slacker Uprising - Michael Moore's latest documentary, which is available for free. I'm a Brit, so It wasn't very relevent to me (surprisingly) but it was still mostly enjoyable.

    Hey brother...

Check out the "Gangland" and "Lockdown" series, if you like prison/gang documentary's.

That's some good shit, right there.

You were the woman who rear ended my car in Sang-nam (spelling?) at 2am this morning. You were in a red Kia and I was in the blue BMW. You said you didn't have insurance and "really couldn't afford this right now". We pulled our cars into an empty parking lot and began to discuss the best way to handle this situation. While we were talking I couldn't help but notice your low cut shirt - and you caught me looking, gave me a smile, and we both agreed to settle this matter "like adults". That was truly one of the best blowjobs I've ever had. I wish I knew your name! ~ Craigslist, Korea.

'The Tower' on 'UK Nova' is riveting stuff.

    Login - UKNova

About a grotty tower block in Deptford which is done up and sold as luxury apartments.

Filmed over a decade, it documents the characters and culture clashes involved.

There's one guy whose dry sense of humour is just irresistible. He's a junky and virtual down and out except he has a hovel of a flat and scrapes by collecting scrap metal, mostly copper wiring. Doubtless he steals some here and there too.

He has a best mate who is not a drug addict, just an alcoholic. Consequently, drug addict thinks of this mate as some kind of success story.

The interesting thing is that all the 'made it' types seem to fail to connect so badly that it's these two who almost seem the best off.

    - 'Yeah, he's a great mate - reliable, known him a while now'
    - 'You must be close'
    - 'Yeah, we've had some times'
    - 'Where did you meet?'
    - 'In a skip'.

Watched Gangland and Lockdown religiously while I was in the UK. Good television indeed.

Cyrille, that looks like just the ticket.

Can I get hold of Gangland and Lockdown on a torrents site?

    Never seen either of em.

I liked louis theroux's 'weird weekends' a few years ago.

His style seemed quirky and different.

    Now it's wearing thin, imo.

He's just having to try too hard to act the naive 'Oh REALLY????' nerd.

Yes, definitely. I think in this case it's more a case that the subject matter is not conducive to his style for this latest series. The Jo-Burg episode's subject matter was undeniably good though. Despite him as opposed to because of him in my opinion. Like his brother though, I think he's a superior journalist. He's essentially doing a Donal Macintyre and a Ross Kemp series without being a cunt and a limited, if likeable, dullard respectively.

I'm watching The Tower now. It really is rather good. I wish the BBC would lift its head out of the sewerage more often nowadays, they still make excellent factual programming.

    Rapidfind.org - Powered by vBulletin

This is a great site fo EVERYTHING. It has docos, sport, movies, foreign movies , software. It is all on rapidshare so can take a little while to download.

This is a little extract from the 'hard hitting documentaries thread' - just those listed under 'T'

....and I'd particularly recommend "The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara' which is Robert MacNamara reflecting on his role in the great events of US history in the second half of the 20th Century. It won an Academy Award and is a very powerful documentary.
