Woke up early for some reason today and lazily clicked through my UBC remote control and came across the HBO series, The Wire. I was blown away. Talk about gritty, real and intense.... whew...! I decided to do some research and was embarrassed that it began in 2002 and I hadn't heard of it until today. From Time Magazine: The Wire has frequently been described by critics as one of the greatest television series of all time.
Man do I ever agree. Anyone care to comment?

It's very good, but I like The Shield better.
Not even in back in the days of "That Was The Week That Was" did I ever tailor my life according to television schedules. But after a couple of episodes of "The Wire" it seems like I shall have to keep one evening a week free.

I watched 1 & 2 and it was OK but nothing spectacular I thought.

No, I sorta agree. Good but not great. Same as you though, I am just wrapping up season 2 so the jury is kinda still out in terms of whether there is drastic improvement.
Good enough to watch the whole series? Yes. Hopefully it picks up though, cuz so far it is good but it just ain't livin' up to the intense hype.
Sometimes the dialog seems realistic, oftentimes seems somewhat contrived. Still much better than most shows on tv though. Certainly the best cop show out there.
I was hooked like a crack-whore by series 2.

Seasons 3 and 4 take it up a notch but to be honest other than maybe The Sopranos I'd find it hard to name any show that transcends the first two seasons in any case. It IS the best television show ever made. That's not hype, just cold hard incontrovertible factoidness.
No show can appeal to that many people and still be good. The Sopranos is no exception to that rule. Its like a Nikolas Cage movie being good, it just can't happen regardless of the box office take or how wankers say they fuckin' loved all the neat explosions.
The wire at least had a cult following. Some room for discriminating taste there, so that's certainly a plus as far as the show is concerned.

In any case, it's not as if The Sopranos had American Idol levels of viewers. It was a popular show on HBO that had many ardent fans as well as universal critical acclaim. The Sopranos was never Sex and the City.

Sopranos was class....loved every one and followed it from the beginning.
Pleased to see that they show it on HBO over here usually before or after some old boxing matches. Love it!
I used to watch Sopranos in the UK but then channel 4 moved it from 10pm to 11.30 on a week night so I tuned out, last episode I saw has Steve Buscemi setting up a massage spa then beating his boss up.
