The Pacific, Steven Spielberg's HBO follow-up to Band Of Brothers reaches our TV screens early next year in ten ferocious instalments and here's a first look at the trailer, courtesy of our pals over at SlashFilm.

Based on veteran Eugene Sledge's wartime account With The Old Breed, The Pacific follows three Marines into combat against the Japanese in 1942, island-hopping across the brutal, blood-saturated battlefields of the Pacific campaign and back home again post-VJ Day. Spielberg and his fellow execs have adopted a similar casting approach to Band Of Brothers, pitching newcomers, James Badge Dale, Joe Mazzello and Jon Seda into the key roles of Leathernecks Robert Leckie, Sledge and John Basilone.
This means more of the $200m budget has been channelled into the special effects and, as exec-producer Tom Hanks told us last month, we should some of the most harrowing battle scenes ever committed to screen. "We show some of the most vicious stuff I've ever seen on film - because it has to be."

Directors on the series include Carl Franklin (Rome), Jeremy Podeswa (Six Feet Under), Tim Van Patten (The Sopranos), as well as Band Of Brothers' helmer Tony To. Following in Terrence Malick's footsteps, they've used Queensland's Daintree National Park as a handy surrogate for the steamy rainforests of Guadalcanal and New Guinea, athough it's probably safe to expect fewer lingering cockatoo shots than The Thin Red Line.

HBO airs The Pacific in the US in March 2010.

(Unfortunately, the trailer has been removed for copyright reason, should be good though)
