Geoffrey Rush as pianist David Helfgott in Shine was pretty damned interesting.

more of a miniseries than a movie, but Michael Gambon was fucking fantastic in the original BBC version of The Singing Detective.

Hilary Swank again, this time for Boys Don't Cry.

Johnny Depp as Ed Wood, but Martin Landau was even better as Bela Lugosi (and SAG members apparently agreed, he won an Oscar for it)...

So are talking about the characters or the actors playing them? because I think that there are a few examples mentioned here of actors playing themselves (Robin Williams springs to mind) rather than any unique character...
