    Nice thread.

These can all be described as since 2000, or at least close.

    In order, best to "worst":

    boardwalk empire
    dexter
    sopranos
brotherhood (#1 recommended because it didn't get much press, very sophisticated and cerebral)
    breaking bad
    walking dead
    the wire
    entourage
    nip/tuck (only the early seasons)
    the shield (gritty)
damages (a couple of miss seasons, but top notch)

One of my favorites series too. I haven't seen the 2009 remake yet.

Back to the present, really like Sanctuary and The Walking Dead.

Game Of Thrones (best current show on TV bar none)
    The Walking Dead

Leave your preconceptions at the door and check out the remake of Battlestar Galactica, one of the best TV shows ever made and nothing like what you might expect from it. If you go in with an open mind and haven't seen it before I envy you: you've 4 seasons, 2 movies and 2 series of webisodes ahead of you and it's all brilliant.

    V(1983)

It has dated a bit, but still entertaining. Cheesy, but some of the effects were better than I thought and the story is pretty good. Haven't seen the remake. It got average reviews at best.

    clarification

Not to be picking nits but shouldn't this thread be titled the top 10 'British' shows? 'Friends' had a HUGE following in England, and even filmed several episodes there, to huge fan turnouts, yet it was not even mentioned.

I'm American. The actors on Friends were good-looking...can't say much else about the show. Now Seinfeld, that was a great show.

I fail to comprehend the numerous recommendations for The Walking Dead...

I dl'd season one and barely made it to episode 6...I only persevered due to boredom and it was painful...

What is the fascination with zombies anyway?...and it's not that so much but the script and acting are ridiculous...what really did me in was the wife with best friend thing that cropped up in ep 2...why so early with the useless drama...like the end of the world and human eating zombies aren't enough drama you have to toss in that useless shit?...so early?...

Total WTF moment and it went downhill from there...

Beavis, then you must not have watched vey much of it....yes some of the actors were attractive, (which hollwood actors aren't?) but their scripting was original, and fresh, and their 'send-ups' of conventional situations ( like when Joey told his dad that '...as long as your're living under my roof, you'll obey my rules' or when Phoebe discovered that her husband was straight) etc etc...the list goes on and on and on... There's more to a show than the faces of the actors, and you obviously missed a lot of what was 'happening'...

Yeah, but there was too much focus on the actual personal lives of what were sitcom characters. I don't care whether Ross and his English girlfriend can make things work. I don't care that Rachel and Monica can't find good men.

That being said, I did think it was funny that Ross was a paleontologist and had a pet monkey. Seems I do have more to say about Friends. The show was good, but not great. Seinfeld blows it away. And Phoebe was a ripoff of Kramer.

I couldn't disagree, more. Everything centered around a punch line with that show. Stand up comedy. It got old, quick.
I cringe when a rerun comes on the tube. Can't change the channel fast enough.
