    the horn

why are Thai drivers always tooting their horns? Every falang I know has commented on this. Just now I got tooted by a tuktuk who was so far away he was nearly in Hat Yai. Then another behind him threw in a couple of blasts toooo, just in case he had an excuse. Then a friggin motorbike, complete with glare, when I was just sitting at the side of the road waiting to cross (he got the disdainful dismissive look - would have given him the finger but they get colossaly offended by that - ever noticed? - good way to start a blood feud).

I reckon they jab their horns all the time cuz it makes them feel like proper drivers

I'm surprised to see this thread. Compared to other cities I've lived in, Bangkok is relatively quiet horn-wise. When it comes to malfunctioning mufflers, however, this place takes the pole position.

I just figure drivers use their horns because they've seen other people do it Nobody knows why anymore.

I agree tomcat, Taiwan must have a law that says if you don't toot your horn every 300 meters, they take away your license.

Essentially, that's it. They use the horn because it's there.

Seoul and all of Korea is far worse.

I personally think it is yet another manifestation of a certain hive mentality that westerners will never comprehend. Annoying, big time.

Wait until you get stuck in a traffic jam in Mexico because Juan or Jose is blocking the line of traffic. Everybody behind the blockage gets on their horn and stays on it. Everybody. This happens many times per day if your guesthouse is on a main street.

Nah, 36,000 kilometers in Thailand haven't made me think the Thais use their horns much more than Texans do.

All countries I know of are worse than Thailand. At least what I know of Thailand. People round here don't need a horn they got a voice that shatters glass.

I don't mind the warning horn, but I walk my neighborhood quite a bit and if there is a stray motosai or tuk-tuk driving down the street I get the "Hey, farang, need a ride" toot.

ees me a great deal. The guys who are based in my neighborhood don't bother anymore, thank god, but the random guys never cease to blow me one if they see me.

I agree with PB, I don't think they USE them as much or more than many other places. But let a bonehead pull a stupid move on you someday and cut in front of you needlessly...get behind him and just LAY on the horn, and Christ! do they get pissed!! It's great!!

Worse than the horns...give a Thai security guard or a Thai cop a whistle!!
Hey!!! A new toy!!! They blow the things till I think their lungs will explode!! Waving at the traffic they're supposedly 'directing' while blowing so loud that they can't really concentrate on or see anything anything except their own gestures!! I've seen Thai parking guards at a mall's parking garage direct people down a dead-end, completely-filled parking lane, then blow the whistle at them AGAIN, complete with hand-held-up in warning, when they backed up to get out of there!! Hilarious!!! :chug:
    ...the beaches...the waves...the bikinis...Chang...ahhhhh!!!!!
