Beer Drinking in LOS: Can it cause Gout?

Can I get Gout merely from drinking Thai beer excessively? (Unwell had a thread on Gout not too long ago.)

The reason I ask is because lately I have been drinking a little excessively (a little not too much). The funny thing is I do not care much for hard liqour. I stick to beer, the usual suspects: Chang, Tiger, Singha, Beer Lao. I hate Heineken. I keep it Thai for the most part .

Just last night, I felt a little funky. My muscles seemed to ache more than usual and felt a little run down. I am suspecting its the beer for some reason?

I understand beer here has fermaldehyde in it (not sure what negative effects this can cause) much more than its western counterparts. Maybe this is the culprit?

    Thought anyone?

    .......LOL

Not sure about gout, but you can get fat from drinking beer excessively. Extra weight and little exercise can make your muscle's ache. I doubt it's gout because that affects your joints, not your muscles.

Re: Beer Drinking in LOS: Can it cause Gout?

It's probably something you ate or something that crawled into you. Cutting down on beer drinking will help solve whatever the probablem might be, but I doubt it's the beer that is directly causing this "gout" and I don't think gout effects muscles, it's mosty joints and joint cartilege I believe. And it's mostly in older people...check WebMD? I'm just guessing it's likely some specific dish you ate that's gonna make you feel achey until you pass it through...

But drinking lots of beer isn't helping. Replace the beer with the green herbal stuff they sell in the BTS and you'll be on the path back to Wellville mate.

Unfortuantely, I got to cut back on my beer Guzzling. I am sure it will help. I have realized this.

The herbal eh? I dont trust buying it here, never have for that matter. Plenty of H20 will help too.

Its probably something I am eating or possibly that I have been neglecting my H20 consumption lately.

6 years and no problems? You are a fricken' machine KK!

Actually, I haven't got sick in a long time until now.

Gout affects joints, muscles and tissue. It is caused by high uric acid levels. Yeast (and thus beer) is about the worst thing you can have, due to its very high purine content.

I hope you don't have it. I've just been diagnosed with the chronic variety, after several years of aches, pains and occasional excruciating agony in my feet, hands and even stomach.

t2 - The first, easiest and most important thing you should do is to make sure you drink lots of water. Especially considering this climate.

Most thais understand this, many of we westerners don't.

Urban myth. Thai beer has so much alcohol that it needs no preservatives. Formaldehyde can be produced from the metabolism of certain alcohols, and can be responsible for a blinding hangover, but not gout.

Thanks Rumphole. I think I am going to lay off the beer for awhile and chill out. If it persists I will have to see the Doc. I am not suspecting it will.

Rumpole is correct and so is the person who recommended lots of water.

The crystals which form are far more likely to occur if you are dehydrated.

Kidney stones are also more common here for the same reasons.

Re: Beer Drinking in LOS: Can it cause Gout?

Formaldehyde is in the beer in LoS and it is nasty shit!
The most well known problems from methanol poisoning are vision problems. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication, and causes birth defects. Due to the lack of a couple of key enzymes, humans are many times more sensitive to the toxic effects of methanol than animals. Therefore, tests of aspartame or methanol on animals do not accurately reflect the danger for humans. As pointed out by Dr Woodrow C. Monte, Director of the Food Science and Nutrition Laboratory at Arizona State University, "There are no human or mammalian studies to evaluate the possible mutagenic, teratogenic, or carcinogenic effects of chronic administration of methyl alcohol."
It has been pointed out that fruit juices and alcoholic beverages contain small amounts of methanol. It is important to remember, that the methanol in natural products never appears alone. In every case, ethanol is present, usually in much higher amounts. Ethanol is an antidote for methanol toxicity in humans. The troops of Desert Storm were "treated" to large amounts of aspartame-sweetened beverages which had been heated to over 86 degrees F. in the Saudi Arabian sun. Many of them returned home with numerous disorders similar to what has been seen in persons who have been chemically poisoned by formaldehyde. The free methanol in the beverages may have been a contributing factor in these illnesses. Other breakdown products of aspartame such as DKP, may also have been a factor.
