Re: Is complaining the new Farang pastime?
In all my past travels I stayed away from expat groups largely because of all the moaning about how bad it all was...."Back in **** we didn't blah blah, and here we gottta blah blah"...
Sure, I'd get pissed off with some things, they were cultural differences I couldn't handle. Glad I stayed away from the whingers.

Re: Is complaining the new Farang pastime?
Complaining, (like all the other things mentioned) occurs back "home" too. It is universal to bitch and moan. You'll never escape it, but you certainly don't have to give in to it.
Does anyone know where I can find some taco shells and sour cream?

Probably a good idea to leave one's burden at the gate before coming in.

Re: Is complaining the new Farang pastime?
''How do the Aussies know when a plane load of Brits arrive? The engines are shut off and you can still hear the whining.''I think complaining is ok. Expats here are not in their native environment. A good whinge can release a lot of pent up stress. By complaining frequently, farangs can relase their stress. Many Asians keep it inside and then they can totally flip out. I look on complaining as a positive mental health activity.

Re: Is complaining the new Farang pastime?
In my experience many farangs that have been in Thailand a long, long time are retired folk with nothing better to do all day than to complain and drink alcohol in huge amounts... Kinda scares me in a way because I hope I dont end up like that.
But like the poster above I agree too, having a little moan is quite normal even when living in ones own country.

Which? Retired, drinking alcohol in huge amounts or complaining?

Dual pricing in Thailand, it happens all over the world. You, as a guest, in this country, can do nothing to change it. If you were in your own country then get into politics either at local or government level and try to change it. It is easier to change when you are inside the system rather than on the outside.
Scams on farangs by traders and girls. They happen the whole world over, not just here. Farangs, here, are now trying to work out scams to circumvent the new visa regulations.
The mental ability of Thais. Please do not try to tell me that there are no mental midgets in your own country. No Brits with the lights on and no-one home, no Americans who are one can short of a six-pack and no Aussie with kangaroos loose in the top paddock?
Relationships with bargirls/prostitutes - would they marry prostitutes in their own country? I know that your girl is different or that she only sold drinks!
Thai civilization/culture is different, now how long did it take you to work that out? It is not better or worse than your country - just different.
I can't get my Vegemite/shampoo/chocolate bar. Is it worth worrying about? Although, I did work with two British ex-military chaps who had Marmite withdrawal symptom but that is a different story!
Did anyone hold a gun to your back to force you onto the Thailand bound plane? Am I saying that if you don't like Thailand then just leave? No but you have to learn to adapt to your surroundings. My pet hate was when a 'free' taxi would not take me to where I wanted to go. Now I just think that he must be a very rich taxi-driver who can afford to turn down fares.

Re: Is complaining the new Farang pastime?
Watching BBC News, people are complaining that they have to fly without bags from the new T5 building at Heathrow. What are we like?
Oh, and BA won't pay for hotel rooms for passengers. Moan, moan, moan, its all we Brits do.
