How many bombs would it take to put you on a plane?

I was discussing this issue with a friend. The bombs seemed pretty far away-for awhile. then the Hatyai blasts and tragedies. Now it would seem that Bangkok is and non-confirmed reports of blasts in other areas are being used as targets. New year's eve saw death and injuries.

How many more to get you on a plane out?

    or

This is home, so no amount of bombings can move you.

Re: How many bombs would it take to put you on a plane?

Good question, and I have also discussed with others.

    For me, not many more...

But part of that is getting pissed off with other aspects of the country anyway, such as recent changes to investment rules, and the uncertain situation re teaching profession.

A shit load of bombs would just seal it for me...

Were all other aspects of life in Thailand "honky dorey" I would tolerate the risk of occasional attacks in Thailand.

It would take one more close to home. I had the "thrill" of watching the bomb explode in Klong Toey, right from my window. Combine this with all the usual mayham and the new mayham from all the new, confusing, regulations - and I'm outta here. The wife has no choice in this matter, as I will not allow our son to continue to be raised and educated in this monkey-controlled, third world zoo.

Re: How many bombs would it take to put you on a plane?

I know that some people have chosen Thailand for a longer term commitment. These people usually have a child/children. Moving away would be a much harder choice for them, and not as easy as it would be for a single person. There are even some here that may have dealt with similar conditions before. Life is a precious thing. Nobody chooses to have these things happen, but sooner or later choices need to be made, discussions had, when is enough enough?

Been there done that, asks the question, "and go where?" That is simply for you to decide. The question can be taken to mean that there is no place left to go, but in my opinion there are many places. I am not suggesting destinations. I am more interested in the amount of danger or unsafe conditions that such terrorist type activities which you consider too much.

The matter of other events that have happened in the recent months may apply in your decisions as well. These are in the form of visa regulations, job requirements and/or job benefits. For some these things may be trivial, but to others they may be cause for great concern. Those people who have called Thailand home for awhile have seen many disturbing events unfold: the 1997 crisis, SARS, Bird Flu, Military Coup, the teacher surge, the Tsunami, the deadly drug crack down, mafia clamp down, business operation times varying, Cambodian hate, occasional stray bombs near the mynmar border, ect... When is it too much for you.

It may be that this was a one time event and all speculating is for naught. In the case that violence is continued, people like ao, BangkokPhil, Ken May, Oh My Cod and other long term residents and posters who have a lot more to think about when considering moving. What do you see as the last straw for you?

The idea one can't return to their home countries is a total myth.

The economies are often stronger back home. Also daycare and education facilities are superior. If you have family that can help you out that's also a plus.

Also, you can always return later; Thailand isn't going anywhere.

If farangs have been in Thailand too long, they often develop rather silly and monolithic ideas about the rest of the world. They start thinking like Thais! Put your family first

On the CBC tonight they had a feature about Thailand and fears of a counter-coup and a possible "clampdown," whatever that means.

Yes there are. I think you may be being derisory but the British as a people have never really let terrorism affect their daily lives. Why should we? As soon as you start doing that they have won.
