This is true of most of the leaders of Western nations too. Common trait it appears. And many of our nations have become cesspools of corruption as well. No? The difference is, in our countries the leaders get their revenge from behind the scenes. They sic the IRS after you, or start a smear campaign to discredit you, or in the case of a nation - like Iran, threaten to bomb the shit outta of your country. Of as in the case of Hugo Chavez, send CIA operatives into your country to subvert your political process and created unrest in the hopes of overthrowing you and your power base. This is typical though. Thais really can't handle criticism in any form. I've never seen a people that are so mentally weak. I don't know if that's the best term to describe it but they seem to lack willpower, independence, and basic self esteem as traits. It's a combination of these attributes which makes Thailand the cesspool that it is.
At least in Thailand, the influence of those criticised is limited to their own country.![]()

Actually, no. I don't believe in cultural relativism or that we are indeed on the same level of Thailand at all. Corruption may occur in most western nations but the system is not so irreparably broken that the average citizen is completely screwed like they are in Thailand. Thailand is a nation that lacks any sort discourse regarding the entrenched corrupt elite or the generations of misused power. In the western world it is permissable to do so and even when things get bad positive change can still occur. Societies are still more progressive even when everyone is subject to the same human flaws.Originally Posted by Kerux

BTW The Nation article quoted at the beginning was a response to this story in the Herald Tribune.

From the International Herald Tribune artcle above from the chairman of a law firm who has lived in Thailand since 1949...
Love it!"Reason usually ends up prevailing in Thailand — after all other options have been exhausted," Lyman said.

Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.
It is a good one

1. I only complain about a common foible rarely. We know service may not be the best. But whinging about it often, doesn't change it. Complaining spreads like a virus and brings the people around you down.
2. Focus on the positive more than the negative.
More opportunities and good attitudes come our way, when we do this, and/or try to.

Part of living in a democracy is the right of freedom of speech which means that criticism is likley to follow. Whilst I understand face to a limited extent i'm sure it inhibits freedom of speech. criticism is a necessary aspect of a progressive society.
