My guess is that if the bullet left at the same speed as the airplane it would remain stationary for a few moments untill the bullet slows down.

Or maybe the explosive force that gave momentum to the projectile ejecting it out the end of the muzzle ...being an Ex Artillery soldier I know that the diferent bombs went at different speeds depending on how much charge powder was used in the cart case

you can have a standard .22 calibre bullet and then a magnum where you still have the standard .22calibre but on the end of a great bloody big shell that will send it along faster that a speeding virus.
