    a 'lucky dog' tale

as usual today, i took my dogs for their afternoon walk which involves a walk on their leads out of our street and round to a wee lane behind our mooban. no traffic here so once we are a safe distance from the main road, the leads come off and the dogs are free t run about and swim in the irrigation canal (surprisingly clean) beside the lane. on the way back i put their leads back on about 50 yards from the main road agai.. but today, Dollar, the little cross decided to do a runner towards the road. (they are not roadwise).. in spite of my calling, she kept going, right to the middle of the road. two pickups at speed almost upon her as she arrived. first pick up swerved and narrowly missed her but the second one, seeing her too late, had no chance as she tried to make it back to the side of the road. i heard the double thump as both front and rear offside wheels caught her and dragged her tumbling 20 yards along the road. i watched in horror as she went flailing beneath the pick up. needless to say the driver didn't stop. i stopped the traffic and ran down the road to retrieve what i thought would be a bundle of broken bones in a dead dog. she hadn't squealed nor yelped and as she lay there she made no sound. i carefully picked her up and she turned her sad eyes towards me. all i could say was 'don't die'.. but i feared the worst as i carried her poor little body home. as she stared up at me, her eyes were slowly closing and i thought to myself, 'she's going' stupid wee dog. i took her into the yard and laid her down on a blanket and tried to make her as comfy as i could. i gave her a gentle touch feeling for broken bones but to my surprise could find no obvious damage..she lay not moving nor opening her eyes for a good half hour. then to my surprise she picked herself up and gingerly took a few steps. i noticed her eye was swelling and filling with blood from behind so i phoned the g/friend and told her to get her ass over here to take the wee soul to the vet.
Taling Chan vetinerary hospital, a wonderful place, took her in. initial examinations showed tyre marks and some damage to her head. however after x-rays the prognosis looked better and at worst she may lose the sight in the damaged eye. after shots to ward off infection and eye drops to clean the damaged eye we took her in the car down to Bang Khae for my teaching appointment. she slept in the car and when we arrived, she was actually quite mobile though obviously very sore.
took her on to the restaurant and finally home by which time she was ready for some food. the change in her from several hours previously when i was sure she would die was incredible.. she is now sleeping beside her big friend Pau (golden retriever) who seemed genuinely concerned. i am sure she will be a very sore and sorry dog tomorrow and hopefully much wiser with regards to the road.
She is indeed a very lucky dog!!

these pics were taken after the visit to the hospital and about 3+ hours after the incident...

if you have bothered reading this story then thank you... i enjoyed writing it.. i like my dogs...

That was a good story. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.........
I am gonna pass it on to a Thai girl I know who loves dogs. This story happened to her about a month ago in Bangkok........

She was driving her car when she noticed a dog bleeding by the side of the road. She actually stopped. got the dog, and took it to a Veterinarian Hospital. It turns out the dog had been bitten by another dog. The bills ended up costing her 8000 baht which was alot for her. And she was making herself a little crazy worrying over the money. When I asked her why she helped the dog she just replied with "I love dogs".
Then she told me that she was actually going to go back to where she found the dog and search for it's owner. I thought that it would be rather pointless to try and find the owner but she was determined. But guess what, of course when she goes out she does actually find the owner of the dog. He ends up returning her 8000 baht and thanking her, and all ends well. True story.....

    Great story,
I have two dogs aswell, the older one is ok traffic wise but the puppy is useless with traffic, my fear is the same thing will happen to her as did yours, but like kids they love to run around an play.
    I love my dogs too

Very sweet story ruri! Happy to hear the dog is recovering well. The dog is very lucky, and must have nine lives.

Really nice pictures, the kids are so cute!

Cool R, I had a case like that just after the superbowl last year. Magpie and I were able to save my 18 year old best friend named Lucky. Thanks again Maggy.
