Thread: Best & Worst Accents

Watching 'Meet Joe Black' t'other night, there was a scene where an elderly woman from the Caribbean was talking with 'Death' (played by Brad Pitt.) I absolutely loved the accent and the dialect. Made me want to hop a flight to Jamaica mon, (Jimbo, that's your cue for pics!)

The most aggravating accent I can think of is lower class English or lower class Australian, ('Strine') both fairly well-parodied by Monty Python. South African and that nasal New York accent a la 'The Nanny' also grate.

So, what's your favourite creole, or linguistic nemesis, hmmm?

I don't mind the South African accent at all. I also like the standard Londoner, Irish, Scottish accents and a little Kiwi on the side ain't bad to my ear. Pikey is fun...but no-one beats an Indian (from Madras) speaking English for me. Love that stuff!

Most accents are tolerable. It's the tics that get me. Going up at the end ogf your sentence like it's a question. The other one that mostly females seem to do for some reason, sallowing the last two words of your sentence in the throat.

Unfortunately it's mostly West Coast Americans and Aussies who tend to do those, so those two accents for me would be the worst.

Yeah sorry.
It's a real middle class, West coast American thing. In a 20 odd word sentence, they'll say the last two or three words in their throat. Sounds ridiculous.

Your strine isn't that thick mate.
But I have heard some very thick strine accents out of North Queensland and many rural areas of Australia.

For me I find some Irish and Scottish accents hard to understand.
Also some English midlands accents.
I've often found that those with very thick accents tend also to use a lot of colloquialisms when they speak which doesn't help much.

I like most strong accents

Irish/ Scottish/cockney/scouse

not geordie or the cider farmboys tho'

Indian accent always puts me in mind of Peter Sellers,,,,,,funny like innit

Personally I find accents interesting, it's only when they're being used by a fuckwit that they become annoying.

was teaching spanish teachers from tenerife earlier this summer...the most charming and exotic accent i've heard for some time.

can still never hear anything remotely positive about the saffa accent...sounds bloody awful.

Italian is similar but even more beautiful IMO.
