Thread: Film Distribution

I may have an opportunity in this business through a friend.

He and a certain Korean superstar are considering an investment in a small Film distribution company. They both attended the same Film School in Seoul (years back) and have remained in touch despite her busy super-stardom schedule.

1/4 of a mill. (usd) each.

So, a 1/2 a mill. start-up company based in Korea. They are looking into distributing in other countries as well, Japan, China, Europe, North Amer.

He would travel alot, to film festivals, etc..., she's busy with her own career, acting and singing. I would be reviewing films and making selections, since my friend is notoriously indecisive.

This is all just a 'maybe,' at this point, but I wonder, with all of the various jobs ajarners have had if anyone has ever played a part in film distribution or otherwise knows much about it.(??)

I'm researching it, but it's always nice to hear first-hand accounts.

I'll be putting zero in... The money is their deal.

This will be little more for me than a side job...making final decisions.

It seems that they want to begin with lesser-known films, independent labels, etc... to make a name first and build a rep. They DON'T want to limit themselves to Korean movies it seems.

This has all just happened, and they've only discussed it once...so no wheels yet. But he seems determined to research hard (for the next couplea' months) and then decide if it'd be worth it.

I think a few more meetings will be scheduled regarding this when her tour ends.

A film distributor is an independent company, a subsidiary company or occasionally an individual, which acts as the final agent between a film production company or some intermediary agent, and a film exhibitor, to the end of securing placement of the producer's film on the exhibitor's screen. In the film business, the term "distribution" refers to the marketing and circulation of movies in theaters, and for home viewing (DVD, Video-On-Demand, Download, Television etc).

Here's the path a film usually takes to get to your local theater:

• Someone has an idea for a movie.
• They create an outline and use it to promote interest in the idea.
• A studio or independent investor decides to purchase rights to the film.
• People are brought together to make the film (screenwriter, producer, director, cast, crew).
• The film is completed and sent to the studio.
• The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
• The distribution company determines how many copies (prints) of the film to make.
• The distribution company shows the movie (screening) to prospective buyers representing the theaters.
• The buyers negotiate with the distribution company on which movies they wish to lease and the terms of the lease agreement.
• The prints are sent to the theaters a few days before the opening day.
• The theater shows the movie for a specified number of weeks (engagement).
• You buy a ticket and watch the movie.
• At the end of the engagement, the theater sends the print back to the distribution company and makes payment on the lease agreement.
