Re: Beware Dubai?
Bloody hell, beggars belief.
Don't think I'll be going there then.
I got stopped by customs at Heathrow, London, coming off the Bangkok flight in 1984. They swabbed the inside of my passport with cotton wool dipped in clear liquid and it turned pink, and they accused me of possessing marijuana
They then searched my hand luggage, cut up my bar of soap, emptied my China tea all over the desk, etc, but didn't find anything and let me go without searching my rucksack. Bizarre

Was it there mate?
But how can you prove a guy is possessing something you cant see, and is on the bottom of your shoe, in a very public and international place? Lawyer?? Embassy??

Re: Beware Dubai?
As you may be aware ao, Arab justice is very much like Thai justice....you don't really need to prove anything...the police are rewarded just for making the arrest...
lawyers, embassies, etc are somebody else's department

Briton jailed for four years in Dubai after customs find cannabis weighing less than a grain of sugar under his shoe
A father-of-three who was found with a microscopic speck of cannabis stuck to the bottom of one of his shoes has been sentenced to four years in a Dubai prison.
Keith Brown, a council youth development officer, was travelling through the United Arab Emirates on his way back to England when he was stopped as he walked through Dubai's main airport.
A search by customs officials uncovered a speck of cannabis weighing just 0.003g - so small it would be invisible to the naked eye and weighing less than a grain of sugar - on the tread of one of his shoes.
Dubai International Airport is a major hub for the Middle East and thousands of Britons pass through it every year to holiday in the glamorous beach and shopping haven.
But many of those tourists and business travellers are likely to be unaware of the strict zero-tolerance drugs policy in the UAE.
One man has even been jailed for possession of three poppy seeds left over from a bread roll he ate at Heathrow Airport. Painkiller codeine is also banned.
Last night campaign group Fair Trials International advised visitors to Dubai and Abu Dhabi to "take extreme caution".
Chief Executive Catherine Wolthuizen said: "We have seen a steep increase in such cases over the last 18 months.
"Customs authorities are using highly sensitive new equipment to conduct extremely thorough searches on travellers and if they find any amount - no matter how minute - it will be enough to attract a mandatory four-year prison sentence."

Surely a blood test would have revealed if he had/hadn't actually consumed any?
Maybe they had him down as a dealer. In which case tip-off/set-up springs to mind.

Quite probably. However, I believe that cannabis can be detected anything up to 48 days after you last used it.
Bearing in mind that this guy was in transit and had just got off a plane, then it's obvious that, had he traces in his system, then the only place he could have indulged was in the country of departure.
I am, myself, dead against any kind of drugs but this case does raise serious concerns After all, if he had a microscopic piece of cannabis on his shoe, then he could hardly be trafficing the stuff and, even if he managed to scrape it off his shoe, then he's hardly going to put it in a spliff and smoke it.
This effectively means that the authorities in Dubai are punishing him for something he did in another country.

The original report in the Mail said that he was a rastafarian which would probably have had 'drug user' flashing over his head like a neon sign.

Re: Beware Dubai?
It's strange that they found it in the first place. Surely it must have happened before?
If not, then tip-off or set-up springs to mind.
Terrifying thought the latter.

Had a similar experience on the coach back from the 'Dam on the French border. They searched my bag - found nothing - and then for good measure decided to slice it open with a stanley knife. They then slung it at me and told me to get back on the coach.
Yet another example of the fine relationship which exists between ourselves and the French.

Re: Beware Dubai?
About 20 years ago, I used to put scented oil in dreadlocks to keep them fresh smelling.
I got stopped at Gatwick on the way back from New York. They said the scent was masking something. They frisked me and went through all of my belongings.
No apology whatsoever, and one of the guys even gave me a nudge in the back as I walked away.

Re: Beware Dubai?
Met a lad from Malta in Australia who was supposed to be there four months earlier and got locked up in Dubai for crumbs in his pockets.
Just previously I had passed through Bangkok with a couple of empty ounce bags in my backpack that I'd foolishy left in there from music festivals.
Got through to Oz after that too.
