Crying in Thailand

Just a general knowledge question, really...

anyone know why Roi-Et is called 101 when there's no 1 to 100?...and less than that number of provinces?

...and how Tungkula became known as Tungkula Ronghai (Tungkula is crying)? Is it cos of a bad drought and referring to the people's struggles there?

Re: Crying in Thailand

Seems that Roi-Et Is a name NOT a number

Tungkula Ronghai comes from a time in the past where theres was a severe drought and the rice and other crops died...and everybody cried.

Re: Crying in Thailand

It has a meaning - in the Lonely planet i think. Something to do with having 11 of something (doors/walls...) then adding a zero in the middle to 101 (roy et) to be more aesthetically pleasing.

Re: Crying in Thailand

Roi-Et means '101 doors' is the legend. Doors meaning front doors meaning the number of houses. Pretty cute. May well have started as 11 as stated above, because you don't normally wait till you've got 101 families before you name your town...
