    How mobile are you?

Can you get your life into a suitcase and a carry on bag. That's what I'll be doing on Saturday when I hit the plane back to Oz. Its a challenge.
In the last 4 years I've gone from a five bedroom house packed with stuff to living in a camper for 8 months to two suitcases to LOS to gradually building up some stuff here to going back to to suitcases.
Mind you, we've just shipped five cubic metres of stuff back to Oz. And back there we have 40 boxes, a Land Rover and a camper trailer stored, so we're not exactly without possessions. Too many, in fact.
But, back to my question, how mobile are you really? How much do possessions mean to you? Could you walk away from everything?
What's the one possession you would NEVER surrender?
An elderly woman in an ATM queue said to the man behind her, "Excuse me, could you help me to check my balance?" So he pushed her over!

    Re: How mobile are you?

I cashed out in USA, and came over with a carryon and two suitcases. There were some hard choices, lots of great books and expensive sporting gear (kayaks, mountaineering and ski stuff). But ultimately, you go out (of this world) with what you brought in which is only yourself. It is liberating in a way. But I find myself acquiring new stuff here in LOS and I like to buy quality. I just hope that someday I don't have to make a run for the Laos border with a couple thousand baht in my pocket and the revolution tearing up the country.

I really tried to cull things down to high value, small portable items. For me, the 80 GB Ipod is the ultimate value item. I sold all my CDs and have everything digital. I have a small collection of family photos that are priceless.

I'm not very mobile what with a ball and chain and a squid round me ankles.

    Re: How mobile are you?

I'm currently facing the same conundrum. It's one I've faced twice before, and I've tried to organize my life around the idea that I need to stay mobile. The hardest things will be the keepsakes and art that adorn my room. Books I always give away to good new owners before I leave, but there are always a few that I need to keep for sentimental reasons. Clothes can be bought where you go, but there are a few items to always keep.

I find it very cathartic to give away all my possessions every now and again.

I find it cathartic as well...but I'm getting older etc...Realistically (to not give up anything) I'd need a 1/2 container. To do it fast, I could walk with one extra check-in bag.

More gentle than the jarring noise of traditional alarms, this clock uses a gradual increase in ambient light, stimulating aromas, and peaceful sounds from nature to awaken sleepers.

Of course, I could always buy a new one.

    1. Very, if pressed (by the law

    2. Very little in the greater scheme of things.

    3. Yes, if the situation made it necessary.

I don't understand. You've sent a container back to Oz where you already have an SUV and 40 boxes of treasures, and now you can't pack your freakin' underwear and toofbrush in a suitcase and carry on?

What's the one possession YOU would never surrender?

Thinking I could stick an internal hard drive in through the USB, I also purchased the same cable. Little was I to know, it needs an external fan too.

Ouch, I used the house fan when it started to slow down due to overheating, I don't even keep it in a case, it's a just incase cable

My biggest loss when I moved to LOS was my pictures, I had some beautiful pics of dragons and some cloth paintings, they are beautiful

    Re: How mobile are you?

Packing down to 20 kilos and 6 kilos hand luggage. It was hard letting the BMW go. Last year I sized down from 2 bed house unfurnished to single room furnished. This is now proving to be more difficult.

There's nothing I have to hold onto though. Just need me, passport comes in handy.
