Thread: Thai's and animals

Something that has baffled me is the Thai's attitudes to pets.

My dad's first Thai wife used to beat our family dog with a piece of bamboo cane for not doing anything wrong at all. She was an old dog and had hip problems. My dad's wife used to play with her roughly too but seemed to not realise that the way she was treating the dog was to mine and my dad's standards cruel. My dad warned her not to treat the dog that way and she appeared confused when my dad confronted her.

My dad ended up getting his first wife a number of pets a rabbit, a cat and another dog. The dog turned nasty and bit her, the rabbit ran away and the cat also ran away. This was because of the way she treated the animals.

Anyway, I haven't really thought much about this until my mum called me up the other day to complain about the attitudes of my dad's second wife. My dad is on holiday in England with his second wife, Porn, and she and my dad visited my mum's house.

My mum told me on the phone Porn kept playing with the cat really rough and pinned her to the floor a number of times. My mum also told me it got so much at one point she nearly shouted at Porn. All I could say was that is the way I have seen Thai people play with animals and that is the culture. Porn probably didn't know what she was doing wasn't acceptable in my mum's eyes. My mum said she was shocked my dad didn't bat an eyelid and all I could explain was he'd possibly got used to it now.

So, has anyone else noticed this? We all know Thai's don't pay much attention to animals judging by all the soi dogs on the streets and such. This isn't to say there are a few Thai's that are different with animals but I'd like to hear your opinions.

Maybe they believe that the animal in question was only reborn as an animal and is therefore morally inferior and to be abused at will?

At uni I had a Jamaican landlady who treated her dog like shit. Maybe in cultures (Thailand, Jamaica) where human life is cheap, animal life is even cheaper? (though technically speaking, humans are animals).

The Jamaican went to church, and many of these sadist fuck Thais will 'make merit' at temples.

Their hypocrisy makes me puke

That said I eat meat which has been inhumanely raised.

Before Cantona or BET say it, I may as well. Having more than about 4 units of alcohol in one session sometimes makes me puke too!

thais are probably not the animal lovers in general that we are, then just look at their kids too
as ling said, they are blinkered hypocrites

Methinks they should pay more attention to the words of the tubby man who hangs around their neck and adorns their dashboards.

Maybe a working class thing over here.

b4 considering the animals,,,the Thais need to look after the beggars n crazies on their streets

and yet many Thais say they couldn't eat wabbits and wamb because they look so cute

Wonder what their slaughterhouses and tanners shops are like.

They're animals...I like dogs and all that....but as someone else said until we start looking after people proper like....fuck the animals (not literally!).
