I got pretty disgusted one day with students playing with their phones. So I demanded all the students take out their phones, which they reluctantly did, and then launched into a lesson where we compared features, cost and so forth of the different models. Each birthday for the last couple years The Wife has threatened to sorry offered to buy me a mobile phone and she gets the same answer every time. I will never own a mobile phone for the reasons that Liz and Phil gave; I don't want to be interrupted whenever some random person feels like it. If there is an emergency people know where to find me and I have ground lines at both properties.

Yes - I naturally take the phones off them if seen or heard in class too, although at the age I teach, 16-18 yos, we're supposed to start treating them like adults (there's a laugh, in itself). But, naturally, some keep trying it on texting under the table when your back is momentarily turned, just like an addiction. If the college were mine and I were permitted to do so, I'd have a device fitted to block all mobile transmissions at college. If your mummy wants to contact you, she'll have to phone reception and leave a message. If you want to get a message to Billy in Class G, tell him yourself at breaktime.
I hate them touch screen experts who stand there using the latest "Mac-N-800-i-phone.net" thingy who have mastered the art of just enough moisture in their fingers to be able to find something they want on the slippery navigation screen without slipping too far because they couldn't lift their finger off the screen in time.
I can't even muster up enough patience to use an i-Pod.

A six-year-old student's mom called him in class one time. Of all the students' parents I've ever wanted to punch... and there have been quite a few... this one was the worst. You KNOW your kid is in class. What could you possibly have to say that can't wait?

One thing mine can do, that I like, is not only does it show the name of the person calling, but their photo too, if you've taken one.
My pet hate with land-line phones was always the people who thought you would automatically pick their voice, so they didn't introduce themselves first, they'd just start rambling. Almost the equivalent of saying "Hi, it's me" to a wrong number.
