what brought you here?
My guess is there`s a similiar post to this somewhere, but I haven`t seen it. I want everyone`s story, newbies and oldies. How did you end up in the Land of Smiles? What brought you here, why did you stay, when will you leave, or when do you think you will come back?
Here`s mine. I cashed in some savings to volunteer for the Red Cross in Khao Lak after the tsunami hit. This was about March 2005. A lot of things had gone tits up for me in the states and I just needed some perspective as I hoped it would pump some life back into me. I worked for about six weeks and then left, as i saw the Red Cross was disorganized and seemed to be pissing off the other relief groups around them, mainly due to one individual we were working for.
I felt I had done my time and I decided to check out the country as well as Laos Cambodia, and Vietnam. I was offerred a job with a nice salary in Isaan and after a few sleepless nights, I decided I wanted to return to the states with the new life pumped into me where I could continue to make music and sort things out with a better perspective.
I went back and started with a great job as Spanish teacher, but eventually, the old mold of America started to form again and I went back to Siam. Now I live in Japan and I want to go live in Thailand once I have enough to start a coffee shop.
What`s your story?

Re: what brought you here?
After a life spent accumulating cash and carefully managing investments, I wanted a place where the fat, old and ugly would make me look good.

Re: what brought you here?
The first time I came, backpacking, twas the cheapness, exoticism and women.
Second short visit was to meet my wife's family and friends who'd not attended our wedding in London.
The third time was boredom with life in London, and my wife's need / desire to be near her family.

Re: what brought you here?
First arrival (from Korea) was in 1997ish....to visit Khao Yai and do some serious trekking/jungle camping.
Accomplished that and realized I was nearly broke. Headed back down to Bangers and got hooked up with an institute in Nonthaburi that farmed us out to Sacred Heart - Klong Toey.
Became very close with my "to be" first wife. A very looooong story of Bkk house jumping - US - Saudi -Thai - Korea follows.

Re: what brought you here?
I was in Malaysia after having an unfortunate situation in which my-then girlfriend allowed all of my money to be stolen by a new illegal maid she hired the first day. I lost my apartment, job, car and a damned good future in Los Angeles/Hollywood as a result.
I spent almost 2 years stuck in Malaysia, unable to find work that paid worth a damn, running restaurants and looking for something.
A friend whom I'd worked with in Korea moved to BKK and told me about the Ajarn.com website. Within a few weeks I found a job as a teacher trainer (largely what I'd been doing for the last couple of years). I took a bus to Hat Yai, interviewed and started the following week.
I arrived with US$50, my school paid for my guesthouse and took it out of my next month's salary. I borrowed another $50 from a woman I met on the bus, whom I dated for a while. I got settled in, spent almost two years as a teacher trainer in Hat Yai, met the right woman, and have worked in Abu Dhabi and Korea in the last year to start paying off debt and saving enough for me and my new family to get a good start on a happy future.

Re: what brought you here?
I was working for a company in the USA doing guest room controls. i came over to commission a nice hotel on the river in bangkok. went back to the usa after that, lost one of my best friends in NY, felt life was too short and needed to do things that made me happy, came back to thailand for vacation, decided that id save up for a few more months and head back to Samui to do something in the guest house field. didnt happen and began teaching in phitsanulok. that was in 2001.

Re: what brought you here?
A 14 hour stopover on a flight to Australia circa '98. Decided to hop on the bus to go and see Bangkok rather than wait in the airport.

Re: what brought you here?
I'm gay and I had heard that Thailand was a veritable Makkah for gay guys so I booked a holiday here. All I can say is that I'm still here...

Do you throw stones at a pillar symbolising good taste and restraint in this gay Mecca?

Re: what brought you here?
I didn't really want to spend another year in Korea, but I couldn't think of any more appealing plans. A friend of mine who was, at the time, planning to move here (he's not, any more) said hey, come to Thailand. I said okay.
