Re: ***Emergency*** need help DunceCap
He called his sister in Washington(state) on her cell phone while he was here, but he used my phone.
His cell phone is down and out, as I've already tried to call him.
But other than that, I don't know Matt
Does anyone know if once he leaves Miami could he pick up the money at any Western Union place along the way?
I had to specify he was in the Miami area when I sent it.

Re: ***Emergency*** need help DunceCap
So do you by any chance still have the number? That would be the best thing. What the hell is he doing going to New Mexico if he is broke? Does he have some family there as well?

Uh, eso...then the number should be on your phone bill. It's a long distance call, so it should be there. Even if you didn't save the call sheet you can contact the phone company, make a request for the date(s) in question and they can provide it to you.
As far as Western Union, if he has the transaction number he should be able to pick it up anywhere. They may try to contact the sender again, but he does have the password, as well. Even easier to do if he shows up at the WU office with his Miami bus ticket and explains the bus left before he could pick it up.
You should also be able to, through either your credit card company or Greyhound, determine if he did pick up the ticket.

nope, I've got my phone service thru my cable internet provider(Comcast) now, so any call within the US is free....no long distance calls itemized on a bill. and my home phone doesn't store numbers called.
as for the WU transfer, I sent the details to him by PM, but he hasn't been online since before that.
Seems he's cadging an internet connection from helpful souls(hit and miss), since his laptop was stolen too...as I understand it.

ok, well that's good then. hopefully he'll be able to get back online to get the details from my PM.
Well his bus has left the station, and my transfer is still waiting to be picked up.

Re: ***Emergency*** need help DunceCap
Will be interesting to hear the full story one day. I'm still surprised how someone could end up in such a situation and have no other avenue than an internet forum for assistance, especially in their own country, but having said that DC has real friends and acquaintances here who he has met and posted with for a few years, so maybe I shouldn't be so surprised. If I was in big trouble in Thailand this is where I would come. I'm sure there are charitable organisations, churches, etc who would be pleased to help with internet, phone, money for food.

Re: ***Emergency*** need help DunceCap
I've never been mugged but I did have almost everything stolen once in a Rio bus station. Luckily I already had my ticket to Recife and $60 in my pocket...enough to eat for the 40 hour bus trip.
I thought I'd be vacationing a couple of months before I started working again...but nope, was in the classroom the following Monday.
I'm not too worried about the transfer not being picked up yet, as there probably was no place to get it at 0550 in the morning. Probably hungry and worried...but hopefully, DC is on the bus.

There are lots of churches and other places/shelters etc., but maybe not in Miami, in that section of town, at that hour. How about Black Dog Devin?

Yes. In Los Angeles the police give a person a voucher for at least one night in a motel and a couple of dollars from Salvation Army. Gets through until you can call mom or a friend.
The next day, the person without funds can go down and file for food stamps and if needed county general assistance. (I imagine that Miami has a similar program. Most cities do.)
I just hope i1der gets repaid quickly. I have been burned a couple of times and am jaded. Still waiting for that $260 I paid the warden to "lose some paperwork" from the La Mesa Prison in TJ to get a Puerto Rican friend out who was doing a year on a drug bust for a joint back in 1982.
Then there is the ex who was wandering around.
Where is your motorbike. (Repossessed.)
5000 baht and 6 months later I remain.... waiting.
i1der if you don't get paid, let's pass the hat around at the next bash for you. Cheers.

EGGGG-XACTLY. IMHO, this situation stinks
there are specific protocols in place for situations just like this.
we're all buddies here. and i too have liked dunce for some time. used to love his animated gif images!
but going online for immediate help is such a shot in the dark-its almost illogical and unnecessarily desperate. asking the police for help, in just making a phone call seems to be not only logical, but the most effective and ready to use.
dunce has been around a while. why he didnt PM the regular stateside folk first is beyond me.
its not that he came here for help thats curious...its that he spammed for help. he knows too many folk here to do that. it would be a waste of time me thinks.
im scratching my bald ass head.

Re: ***Emergency*** need help DunceCap
It does seem weird, but then he was probably feeling pretty desperate... I know I would be, if I'd just been mugged... and maybe he wasn't quite thinking as clearly as those of us who are more removed from the situation.
