Since I was too lazy to do it, my thanks to Serge for deciphering his scribblings and editing them to an appropriate length. Anyway, just visited him again. He's walking now, in good spirits, and the docs say he'll probably be out on Saturday. The brace should be off in four months. He's already got his post-op life mapped out and ready to roll. Also, I poured water on his head and got him to say "Wah-wah-wah-water!" Breakthrough!

Re: My letter to the world from my hospital bed
Ken,
Your letter was great and certainly an inspiration to me. It also made me ashamed of myself. On June 19th the long iron gate in front of my house fell on my leg breaking both bones, send one right through me foot. My foot was connected to my leg by skin only. It was the first time in my life to have anything broken. I also received all the care, milk, juice, visitors that you did. That amazed me as I know it would not have been like that at home. When I say I am ashamed of myself it is because I could not imagine anything worse than what I was dealing with, then I read your post. Here I am fussing because I still have to have in home assistance, can't drive, can't go shopping, can't prepare my own meals, etc. Mostly because I am still on crutches and can not carry anything. I am back at school, now for 2 weeks. I know I am blessed to have not been killed or at least really crushed by the gate. It only caught my left leg. The lack of independence and mobility is harder for me than the injury. Some of what you said about that is so profound and beautiful. I have recently pulled myself up and dusted myself off, and am practicing more "living in the moment". I am not by nature a negative person but this did get me down.
I wish you a speedy recovery and a healthy, painfree rest of your life. I will be walking without aid (I hope) in a couple more months so will be ahead of you by a couple of moths. I will keep you in my thoughts and check on you here from tme to time.
Again, thank you for the beautiful words.
Paula

Thanks for the note Ken. A rough time for you, and a good reminder to the rest of us to count our blessings.
Your 'motion' analogy reminded me of this from the somewhat under-rated Rocky Balboa movie:

Re: My letter to the world from my hospital bed
I really enjoyed reading your words, Ken. I was happy to get to meet you as well. My wish for you is a speedy recovery. You are so lucky to have great friends during this time of your life. I thought of my favourite poem when reading your words, and wanted to share it with you. God Speed.
Don't Quit
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Good to see your worlds Ken...one step at a time and you will as good as new. Going through a recovery from an extensive surgury myself and if I learned anything is I need to be more patient...don't push it, the body is an amazing thing and will take care of you. Best Wishes

Re: My letter to the world from my hospital bed
Ken,
I had a life threatening accident in 2001. I can tell you from expierence that you will go through some tough times not only physically but mentally also. But with people around you that love and care for you, you can pull through this and get back to some sort of a normal life. Good luck!
