Violence in American Schools and prisons compared

Watching television adn reading - I have been led to believe that American Schools are a lot more violent than other shcools around the world.

Is this just down to the fact that there are more guns there.

But if this is true why are the prisons meant to be more violent then - everything I see and read and hear makes it look like you get your teeeth kicked out on day one to make you a perfect cock sucking machine.

Are they more violent than other western countries?

Well, Mr. Squirrel, while you don't intend to start an anti-American thread, chances are it will be. But, let's try.

I assumed American schools were more violent than the ones in other countries, and they may well be. Surely there are some reasonably reliable statistics from the USA, but I doubt that statistics in other countries can be compared. Asia is not the only continent where the government refuses to lose face.

I can only relate this anecdote: my daughter has taught in a suburban district since 1988, full time. She taught the equivalent of P6 in a middle school in a far suburb, and M4 chemistry in what's almost an inner city school. She has never been assaulted, nor even threatened, in almost 17 years.

It's hard to say Mrs Q.
I'd recommend an intensive study into Australian schools.

For say six months to a year provide each Aussie student with a .32 and a full clip.
Record number of violent acts where firearms are used.

If the numbers are similar to the american figures then it's guns.........if not it's the Yanks.

American prisons are worse than Canadian prisons, that for certain.

I've talked to people who have spent time in both.

Our countries (USA/Can) also have a 'prisoner swap treaty'...where Canadians in US prisons and Americans in Canadian prisons can apply to serve out their sentence in their respective countries.

The Canadians all apply to come home; the Americans don't apply...for the most part.

American violence also appears more pronounced since they have 10X the population of Canada, 15X Australian, and I don't even want to calculate New Zealand.

In short, about the population of the rest of the native English speaking nations combined. And then some.

I'd say the UK prisons are 2nd worst; I don't know about the schools.

Canada's schools can be bad. That's primarily because of the minorities.

Probably same as the US. Although it always seems to be white kids going on major Columbine-style rampages...and killing other white kids.
